Chapter 2 — The Signal That Changed Everything

Chapter 2 — The Signal That Changed Everything
The signal lasted less than a second.
Most of the guests never noticed it.
But Sarah Chen's partner, Paramedic David Morales, did.
Without saying a word, he stepped away from the stretcher and reached for his radio.
"Dispatch," he said calmly, "upgrade this response."
A pause.
Then four words that froze the entire backyard.
"Request immediate police assistance."
The music stopped.
Someone quietly turned off the outdoor speakers.
Tyler forced out a laugh.
"Seriously? Over an accident?"
Sarah never looked at him.
She continued stabilizing my spine.
"What floor did she fall from?"
"The second," someone answered.
"Were there witnesses?"
Silence.
Three hundred guests.
Not one voice.
My mother folded her arms tighter.
"It was an accident," she insisted.
"Bridget has always been emotional."
Sarah finally looked up.
"I didn't ask for opinions."
"I asked for witnesses."
No one spoke.
Then...
A tiny voice broke the silence.
"I saw."
Every head turned.
Eight-year-old Mason stepped out from behind his mother.
Lauren gasped.
"Mason—"
"He pushed Aunt Bridget."
The little boy's lip trembled.
"Daddy was mad."
Tyler spun around.
"Mason, stop talking."
The boy shrank back instinctively.
Sarah noticed.
So did everyone else.
Lauren wrapped both arms around her son.
For the first time that afternoon, she looked directly at Tyler.
Not with fear.
With exhaustion.

Police sirens echoed down the street.
Tyler's confidence began to crack.
