Chapter 4: The Table We Built Instead

Chapter 4: The Table We Built Instead
Two weeks later, Maisie and I set up a small table in our apartment.
No matching sweaters.
No assigned seats.
Just pancakes and syrup and a crooked little Christmas tree from a grocery store parking lot.
She looked up at me mid-bite.
“Mom?”
“Yeah?”
“Do I have a grandpa?”
I didn’t answer right away.
Because the truth wasn’t simple.
She still had one biologically.
But not one who behaved like it mattered.
So I said the only honest thing I could.
“You have me,” I said. “And that means you already have enough family.”
She nodded like that made perfect sense.
Then she smiled.
And for the first time in a long time, I believed it too.
Final Line
Family isn’t where you’re seated.
May you like
It’s who refuses to let you fall.
The End.
