CHAPTER 10: THE BETRAYER WITHIN THE FAMILY

CHAPTER 10: THE BETRAYER WITHIN THE FAMILY

The Truth About Lily Will Change Everything

The courtroom erupted.

People shouted.

Reporters moved forward.

Cameras flashed so quickly that the entire room looked like a storm of white light.

The judge struck the gavel repeatedly.

"Order!"

"ORDER!"

But nobody was listening.

Because Jonathan Vale had just done the one thing everyone in that room believed was impossible.

He had turned the entire story upside down.

The victim.

The father.

The abuser.

The conspiracy.

Everything had suddenly become uncertain.

And uncertainty was exactly what powerful people used to survive.

I looked at Lily.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't angry.

She wasn't surprised.

That was the first thing I noticed.

She looked...

tired.

Like someone who had been carrying a secret for so long that finally hearing it spoken aloud felt less like a shock...

and more like a release.

"Lily."

She looked at me.

"Dad..."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"I'm sorry."

Those two words hurt more than anything Jonathan had said.

Because I knew.

She had known.

Jonathan sat calmly on the witness stand.

He didn't look like a man revealing a secret.

He looked like a man completing a plan.

That was always Jonathan's greatest strength.

Patience.

He never rushed.

He waited.

Sometimes for years.

Sometimes decades.

Until the exact moment when one sentence could destroy everything.

And now he had chosen that moment.

The judge stared at Jonathan.

"Mr. Vale."

"You will explain your statement."

"Clearly."

Jonathan nodded.

"Of course, Your Honor."

He looked toward the jury.

"Arthur Miller created Nightfall."

A pause.

"But what nobody knew..."

"was that he did not create it to gain power."

"He created it because he discovered something."

The prosecutor stood.

"Objection."

"Speculation."

The judge looked at Jonathan.

"Answer carefully."

Jonathan smiled slightly.

"I am not speculating."

"I was there."

The room became silent.

Jonathan continued.

"Fifteen years ago, Nightfall was designed to expose people who believed they were untouchable."

"Criminals."

"Corrupt officials."

"Powerful individuals who manipulated the system."

He looked at me.

"Arthur believed information was the only weapon strong enough to defeat people like that."

The judge nodded.

"Continue."

"But then Arthur discovered the truth."

"Nightfall itself had been compromised."

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

"Someone inside the organization had been selling information."

"Using investigations for personal gain."

"Protecting criminals instead of exposing them."

Jonathan paused.

"And Arthur found out who."

Every person in the courtroom waited.

But Jonathan didn't answer.

Not yet.

Because Jonathan enjoyed controlling the timing.

He always had.

"The person Arthur trusted most..."

"He hid the evidence."

"He protected that person."

"And then he disappeared."

The prosecutor looked confused.

"Who are you talking about?"

Jonathan turned.

Toward Lily.

My entire body tightened.

"No."

The word escaped quietly.

Jonathan heard it.

He smiled.

Because he wanted me to say it.

He wanted the room to hear my fear.

"Arthur."

He said calmly.

"You spent fifteen years protecting your daughter from the truth."

"But the truth is..."

"Lily was never just your daughter."

The courtroom froze.

Lily closed her eyes.

And finally...

she spoke.

"Stop."

Everyone turned.

Even Jonathan.

For the first time, his expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

A small crack.

Because Jonathan had not expected her to interrupt.

Not like that.

The judge looked at her.

"Mrs. Miller?"

Lily stood slowly.

"I want to speak."

The courtroom held its breath.

The judge hesitated.

Then nodded.

"You may."

Lily walked forward.

Every step looked difficult.

Not because she was weak.

Because she was facing the one person who had controlled her life from the shadows.

Jonathan Vale.

She looked at him.

"You always did this."

Jonathan remained silent.

"You always made people believe they were choosing."

A pause.

"But you had already decided the ending."

Jonathan's eyes narrowed.

Interesting.

For the first time...

he looked uncertain.

Lily turned toward the jury.

"My father did create Nightfall."

The courtroom reacted.

I closed my eyes.

The truth was finally out.

But Lily continued.

"He created it because he believed people deserved justice."

"He walked away because he discovered the people running it were becoming the same kind of people they were supposed to stop."

She looked at me.

"He left because he wanted me to have a normal life."

Her voice broke.

"Not because he was guilty."

Jonathan interrupted.

"Careful, Lily."

The warning in his voice was obvious.

A warning only she understood.

But she continued.

"No."

"I spent years being afraid of you."

"I spent years believing my father was the danger."

"But I finally understand."

She looked directly at Jonathan.

"You were the one who needed me to believe that."

The courtroom went silent.

Jonathan's expression hardened.

"You don't understand what you are."

Lily looked at him.

"Then tell me."

Jonathan didn't answer.

That silence was the answer.

The prosecutor stepped forward.

"Mr. Vale."

"Did you contact Lily Miller when she was seventeen?"

Jonathan looked at him.

"Yes."

The courtroom reacted.

"Did you provide her with information about Arthur Miller?"

"Yes."

"Did you manipulate her emotions?"

A pause.

"I gave her information."

The prosecutor frowned.

"That wasn't the question."

Jonathan smiled.

"Truth often feels like manipulation to people who are protected by lies."

I felt anger rising.

Not because he was insulting me.

Because he was doing what he always did.

Turning cruelty into philosophy.

Making control sound like wisdom.

The prosecutor continued.

"Did you later assist Richard Hale?"

Jonathan looked toward Richard.

For the first time, Richard looked uncomfortable.

"Yes."

The courtroom exploded again.

Richard stood.

"What?"

Jonathan ignored him.

"You wanted the truth."

He said calmly.

"I'm giving it."

Richard's face changed.

"You said you were helping me."

Jonathan looked at him.

"No."

"I said I was giving you an opportunity."

Richard stared.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you were useful."

The realization hit Richard harder than any accusation.

He had spent months believing he was working with someone powerful.

He was only a tool.

Again.

The prosecutor turned back.

"Mr. Vale."

"Why Richard Hale?"

Jonathan answered immediately.

"Because Richard was exactly what we needed."

"A man with money."

"Influence."

"Access."

"And most importantly..."

"A belief that he was smarter than everyone else."

Richard's face went pale.

Because that was the truth.

Jonathan hadn't chosen Richard despite his arrogance.

He chose him because of it.

Then Jonathan revealed the final piece.

"The Nightfall Archive was never stolen."

The courtroom froze.

"What?"

The prosecutor looked confused.

Jonathan continued.

"Arthur didn't take it."

"He hid it."

"Where?"

Nobody moved.

Jonathan looked at Lily.

"Inside the only person he trusted completely."

My heart stopped.

No.

Not possible.

Jonathan smiled.

"Lily was the archive."

The room exploded.

Lily looked down.

And finally...

she said the words nobody expected.

"Yes."

Silence.

Complete silence.

I stared at my daughter.

"Lily..."

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"I'm sorry, Dad."

I couldn't speak.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The night she disappeared.

The files.

The strange memories.

The reason people watched her.

The reason Richard wanted her.

"I didn't know at first."

Lily's voice shook.

"When I was seventeen, Jonathan showed me things."

"He told me my father had hidden something from me."

"He told me I was carrying something important."

She looked at me.

"But he lied."

A tear fell.

"Because Dad didn't hide it from me."

"He protected me."

Jonathan's face finally changed.

Anger.

Real anger.

"You don't know what you're saying."

Lily looked at him.

"No."

"I know exactly what I'm saying."

The prosecutor approached.

"What is the Nightfall Archive?"

Lily answered.

"Not documents."

"Not files."

"Not a computer."

A pause.

"It's a memory key."

Everyone looked confused.

She continued:

"My father created a system."

"One that could store information without anyone knowing."

"He encrypted it."

"He divided the access."

"And he gave the final authorization to me."

I finally understood.

Fifteen years ago, I didn't just protect my daughter from my past.

I unknowingly made her the safest place to hide the truth.

Because nobody would ever suspect Lily.

Richard suddenly laughed.

Quietly.

Everyone looked at him.

He smiled.

"You idiots."

The judge frowned.

"Mr. Hale."

But Richard didn't stop.

"You think this changes anything?"

"You think exposing Jonathan saves you?"

He looked at me.

Then Lily.

"You still don't understand."

"What?"

Richard smiled.

"The archive isn't the only thing hidden inside Lily."

The room froze.

My blood went cold.

Because Richard knew something else.

Something even Jonathan hadn't revealed.

"What are you talking about?"

Richard looked at me.

And said:

"Ask your daughter about the night she came home."

"Ask her what she brought back."

Lily's face lost all color.

And that was when I knew.

There was another secret.

A deeper one.

May you like

A secret even my daughter had never told me.
