Chapter 8 – Richard's Empire

Chapter 8 – Richard's Empire
The elevator doors opened on the seventh floor of Boston Medical Center.
I was already moving before they fully separated.
Monroe and two federal agents followed close behind.
Every second felt like an hour.
Every hallway felt too long.
Every person walking toward us looked like a possible threat.
Because after everything we had discovered, I understood one terrifying truth:
The Covenant didn't need to break into places.
They belonged inside them.
"Lily's room?"
I demanded.
The nurse at the station looked startled by my urgency.
"Mr. Bennett?"
"Her room."
She glanced at Monroe's badge.
Then immediately pointed down the hallway.
"Room 724."
I ran.
The door was open.
My heart stopped.
For one horrible moment, I imagined the worst.
Then I saw her.
Lily was sitting upright in bed.
Alive.
Safe.
Confused.
"Dad?"
I crossed the room and hugged her carefully.
She winced slightly from her injuries but didn't complain.
"What's happening?"
I looked around.
Rosa stood near the window.
Her face was pale.
"What happened?"
She answered quietly.
"Someone came asking questions."
The room became silent.
"Who?"
Rosa looked toward Lily.
"He said he was from the hospital administration."
"But he wasn't."
Monroe stepped forward.
"Did you see his face?"
Rosa nodded.
"I recognized him."
That made me freeze.
"From where?"
She swallowed.
"Richard's mansion."
The name was enough.
Richard.
Even though he was imprisoned.
Even though his empire was collapsing.
His influence was still moving.
"What did he want?"
Rosa looked at Lily.
"He wanted to know if she remembered anything."
My eyes narrowed.
"Anything about what?"
Lily answered softly.
"The files."
The room changed.
Monroe looked at her.
"What files?"
Lily hesitated.
Then reached into the drawer beside her bed.
She pulled out a small envelope.
"I took these from Richard's office before Easter."
Everyone stared.
"You never told us?"
She shook her head.
"I was scared."
Inside were copies of documents.
Property records.
Account numbers.
Photographs.
And one handwritten note.
The note contained only six words:
THE FINAL TRANSFER BEGINS EASTER.
Monroe studied it.
"Easter wasn't just a party."
I shook my head.
"No."
"It was a deadline."
The pieces started connecting.
Richard had gathered wealthy investors.
Created legal structures.
Controlled judges and officials.
But why Easter?
Why that specific date?
Sarah began analyzing the documents.
Then suddenly stopped.
"Wait."
"What?"
She pointed.
"This isn't about Lily."
"What do you mean?"
She highlighted a list of names.
My name wasn't first.
Lily's wasn't second.
The list contained dozens of people.
All wealthy.
All vulnerable.
All selected.
Richard wasn't planning one crime.
He was preparing a nationwide operation.
Easter Sunday was the beginning of a coordinated transfer.
"How much?" Monroe asked.
Sarah calculated.
Then looked up.
"Estimated?"
"Over four billion dollars."
Nobody spoke.
Richard Holloway had built an empire.
But not the kind people saw in magazines.
The luxury homes.
The charity events.
The development projects.
Those were the costume.
The real empire was invisible.
An empire built from stolen lives.
I looked at Lily.
"How did you find these?"
She looked embarrassed.
"Because I was trying to leave."
The words hit me.
"You were leaving?"
She nodded.
"I had a plan."
She explained.
For months, she had secretly collected information.
Bank statements.
Emails.
Documents.
She had noticed strange transfers.
Properties purchased without her knowledge.
Conversations Richard stopped having when she entered rooms.
She knew something was wrong.
But she was afraid.
"I thought if I left quietly..."
She looked down.
"...he would let me go."
I shook my head.
"No."
She looked at me.
"People like him don't lose control peacefully."
Rosa quietly spoke.
"He knew she was preparing."
Everyone turned.
Rosa continued.
"That's why he became worse."
"He wasn't angry."
"He was desperate."
Monroe looked at the evidence.
"Richard knew Easter was his final opportunity."
She turned to me.
"And you arriving early destroyed everything."
I thought about it.
The business trip.
The early return.
The unexpected flight change.
The voicemail.
The timing.
It felt like coincidence.
But after everything...
I wasn't sure I believed in coincidence anymore.
"Where is Richard now?" Lily asked.
The room became uncomfortable.
I answered honestly.
"We don't know."
Monroe added:
"He disappeared during the mansion attack."
Lily's face changed.
"He'll come back."
Everyone looked at her.
"Why?"
She stared at the floor.
"Because Richard never cared about money."
A pause.
"He cared about winning."
The next morning, the investigation into Richard Holloway's empire officially expanded.
Federal agents searched every company connected to him.
The results were worse than expected.
Richard owned:
Luxury construction firms.
Private investment groups.
Real estate trusts.
Medical consulting companies.
Legal service providers.
But hidden underneath...
Were thousands of victims.
One elderly couple had lost their retirement home.
A disabled veteran had been forced into a fraudulent guardianship.
A widow's inheritance disappeared through fake legal fees.
A business owner had signed away his company after being falsely declared mentally unstable.
Every victim had the same story.
A person arrived promising help.
A person gained trust.
A person took everything.
The common name appeared again and again.
Richard Holloway.
But the deeper investigators searched...
The more they realized Richard wasn't the architect.
He was the face.
The salesman.
The man who smiled for cameras.
The man who shook hands.
The man who convinced people he was helping them.
Then Sarah discovered something hidden in Richard's corporate records.
A private meeting schedule.
The final entry was dated three days before Easter.
Location:
A private island off the coast of Maine.
Attendees:
Richard Holloway.
Daniel Whitmore.
Elias Voss.
Samuel Knox.
And one unnamed participant.
The meeting title:
SUCCESSION.
Monroe looked at me.
"Who is the unnamed person?"
Sarah tried opening the file.
A password appeared.
She attempted several combinations.
Nothing.
Then the system suddenly unlocked itself.
Everyone froze.
A message appeared.
HELLO, ATLAS.
I THOUGHT YOU WOULD FIND THIS EVENTUALLY.
A video file opened.
The camera showed Richard sitting in a dark room.
But he wasn't alone.
Someone sat beside him.
Someone whose face remained hidden.
Richard looked nervous.
Afraid.
The opposite of the man we saw at Easter.
The hidden figure spoke.
"You failed."
Richard lowered his head.
"I underestimated him."
The voice answered:
"No."
"You underestimated his reason for fighting."
The figure leaned closer to the camera.
"And now we have to remove the last obstacle."
Richard looked up.
"Arthur?"
A pause.
Then the stranger replied:
"No."
"Lily."
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Because we finally understood.
Richard's empire wasn't falling apart because of me.
It was falling apart because Lily had survived.
May you like
And somewhere in the darkness...
Someone far more powerful than Richard Holloway had decided my daughter was the final piece that needed to disappear.
