Chapter 7 – The Investigation

Chapter 7 – The Investigation
The boardroom remained silent.
Robert Langford slowly closed the Project Phoenix folder.
No one reached for it again.
The title alone was enough to chill the room.
It had never been a divorce strategy.
It had been a succession plan.
A plan written by a man who believed Cassidy would quietly disappear.
A plan built on the assumption that no one would ever discover who truly owned Blackstone Global.
Brendan hadn't just underestimated his wife.
He had unknowingly tried to steal her empire.
Arthur turned toward the Corporate Compliance Director.
"Begin the report."
The woman standing near the projector nodded.
Her name was Margaret Ellis.
She had spent thirty-two years investigating corporate fraud.
Her reputation inside Blackstone was legendary.
William Ashford used to joke that Margaret could find a missing penny in a billion-dollar budget.
Tonight, she carried six thick binders.
Each was labeled with Brendan's name.
She placed them on the conference table one by one.
The sound echoed through the room.
Thud.
Thud.
Thud.
Six years of evidence.
"Our investigation began at 7:14 p.m.," Margaret said.
"Under Protocol Seven."
She pressed a button on the remote.
A timeline appeared on the large screen.
Every transfer.
Every purchase.
Every executive approval.
Every deleted email.
Every access log.
Every calendar appointment.
Thousands of entries.
One name appeared again and again.
Brendan Monroe.
"The preliminary audit covers only the last four years."
Margaret glanced toward Cassidy.
"We're still reviewing earlier records."
Robert frowned.
"And already?"
Margaret opened the first binder.
"We have identified ninety-seven violations of corporate policy."
Arthur quietly added,
"And seventeen potential criminal offenses."
The room fell silent.
The first category appeared on the screen.
Executive Expense Abuse
Margaret clicked to the next slide.
Photographs filled the monitor.
Luxury vacations.
Private villas.
Five-star resorts.
A seventy-foot yacht anchored off the Amalfi Coast.
Jessica wearing designer jewelry.
Brendan drinking champagne beside an infinity pool.
The invoices appeared beside each photograph.
Charged to:
Executive Strategic Development.
Margaret looked around the room.
"The conference Brendan claimed to attend..."
She changed the slide.
"...never existed."
Robert narrowed his eyes.
"The company paid?"
"Every dollar."
Another slide appeared.
A black sports car.
Then another.
Then a third.
Margaret read the totals.
"Three executive vehicles."
"None registered to Blackstone."
Arthur frowned.
"Where are they?"
"We located two."
"And the third?"
Margaret paused.
"It belongs to Jessica Collins."
No one said anything.
The next category appeared.
Personal Residence Renovations
Margaret displayed blueprints.
Invoices.
Photographs.
The Monroe family estate.
Diane's dining room.
The same room where Cassidy had been humiliated only hours earlier.
Margaret pointed to the hardwood floor.
"The imported Italian oak..."
She turned another page.
"...was billed as emergency flooring for a regional distribution center."
Robert closed his eyes.
"The Persian rug..."
She continued.
"...classified as executive office furnishings."
The chandelier.
Listed as warehouse lighting.
The wine cellar.
Recorded as climate-controlled document storage.
One fraudulent invoice after another.
Arthur leaned back.
"They weren't even trying to hide it."
Margaret nodded.
"They stopped believing anyone would look."
The next section hit even harder.
Ghost Employees
Margaret displayed a spreadsheet.
Twenty-eight names.
Monthly salaries.
Health insurance.
Retirement contributions.
Robert frowned.
"I don't recognize these employees."
"You shouldn't."
Margaret answered.
"They don't exist."
The salaries had been deposited into shell accounts.
Every account ultimately traced back to companies controlled by Brendan.
The total exceeded eleven million dollars.
Evelyn looked horrified.
"Payroll never caught this?"
Margaret shook her head.
"The approvals came directly from Brendan's office."
"He bypassed normal review."
Arthur quietly added,
"He designed the bypass himself."
Another folder opened.
Vendor Fraud
A construction company.
An IT contractor.
A consulting firm.
A transportation supplier.
Each received millions in company payments.
Margaret clicked once more.
Every business shared the same mailing address.
An abandoned mailbox in Wyoming.
Robert stared.
"They're fake."
"Yes."
"Who owns them?"
Margaret displayed the ownership records.
Every shell company eventually connected to one trust.
The Monroe Family Investment Trust.
The room grew noticeably colder.
Then came something far worse.
Margaret opened Binder Four.
"This section concerns personnel."
She hesitated.
Even she seemed uncomfortable.
Robert looked at her.
"Go ahead."
She nodded.
"Over the past five years..."
"...forty-three employee complaints disappeared."
Arthur frowned.
"Disappeared?"
"They were closed without investigation."
"What kind of complaints?"
Margaret looked toward Cassidy.
"Harassment."
"Discrimination."
"Retaliation."
She swallowed.
"Most involved Brendan."
One by one, anonymous employee statements appeared.
'My promotion was denied after I rejected dinner invitations.'
'He threatened my career.'
'HR said there was no evidence.'
'My complaint vanished.'
Margaret looked around the room.
"The evidence didn't vanish."
She held up another folder.
"It was locked inside Brendan's private safe."
Robert's hands clenched into fists.
"He silenced them."
"Yes."
"For years."
Arthur looked toward Cassidy.
"I should've seen it."
She gently shook her head.
"No."
"He made sure no one did."
Margaret continued.
"There is one final category."
Her voice became quieter.
"The most serious."
The projector changed again.
Project Phoenix
The room instantly tensed.
Margaret opened a red folder instead of a blue one.
"These documents were encrypted separately."
She projected Brendan's handwritten notes.
The first page contained a list.
Phase One
Separate Cassidy socially.
Phase Two
Encourage voluntary divorce.
Phase Three
Challenge custody.
Phase Four
Acquire remaining executive support.
The room was silent.
Then Margaret displayed the final page.
The title alone made Arthur stop breathing.
If Cassidy Resists
Below it...
Only one sentence.
Question her mental stability until the Board removes her permanently.
Robert slowly stood.
His chair scraped loudly across the hardwood floor.
He walked toward the windows without speaking.
After nearly a minute, he quietly asked,
"Did he know?"
Arthur understood immediately.
"Know what?"
"That Cassidy owned Blackstone."
Margaret answered before anyone else could.
"No."
Robert turned.
"How can you be certain?"
She held up Brendan's private journal.
"We recovered it from the safe."
She opened to the final entry.
Brendan had written:
'Cassidy always acted like she knew more than everyone else.
One day she'll realize she married the wrong man.
When Project Phoenix is complete, I'll finally build something of my own.'
Margaret closed the journal.
"He genuinely believed Blackstone belonged to the executives."
Arthur let out a slow breath.
"He never understood."
"No."
Margaret agreed.
"He thought he was climbing the mountain."
She looked toward Cassidy.
"He never realized..."
"...he'd been standing in the owner's shadow the entire time."
Just then, the boardroom doors opened.
A young investigator hurried inside carrying a sealed evidence envelope.
"I'm sorry to interrupt."
Arthur frowned.
"What is it?"
"We finished reviewing the building security footage."
"And?"
The investigator looked directly at Cassidy.
"We found someone entering your private executive office..."
He checked his notes.
"...every Sunday night for nearly three years."
Cassidy frowned.
"My office has biometric locks."
"It wasn't opened with a fingerprint."
"Then how?"
The investigator slowly placed a duplicate executive access card on the conference table.
"It was opened..."
"...using Chairman-level credentials."
The room fell silent.
Robert stared at the card.
There were only three Chairman-level access cards in existence.
One belonged to Cassidy.
One belonged to Arthur.
And one...
Had been reported destroyed after William Ashford's funeral.
Someone had lied.
Which meant the investigation had just uncovered something even more dangerous than Brendan's fraud.
Someone else...
Had been inside Blackstone all along.
May you like
Someone with access to every secret the company possessed.
