CHAPTER 18 — THE HONOR THEY STOLE

THEY ERASED THEIR DAUGHTER—THEN THE ADMIRAL SALUTED HER
CHAPTER 18 — THE HONOR THEY STOLE
The hardest betrayals were not the ones that surprised you.
They were the ones that confirmed your deepest fears.
I had spent my entire life learning one lesson:
Never trust completely.
My father taught me that.
My family taught me that.
The battlefield taught me that.
But somehow...
I had allowed one exception.
Admiral Jonathan Reed.
The man who stood beside me when the world turned against me.
The man who believed in me when my own family erased me.
The man who looked at my scars and saw courage instead of weakness.
The man whose signature had opened the door for Arthur Ashford to escape.
I stared at the evidence on the tablet.
Again.
And again.
And again.
AUTHORIZED ACCESS: ADMIRAL JONATHAN REED
There were no explanations.
No excuses.
No hidden messages.
Just his name.
The truth was always cruelest when it was simple.
"Celeste."
Julian's voice pulled me back.
I looked at him.
"You don't believe it."
It wasn't a question.
"No."
My answer came immediately.
Too immediately.
Julian studied me.
"Why?"
I looked toward the empty hallway where the Admiral had stood.
"Because if Reed wanted Arthur free..."
I paused.
"He could have done it years ago."
Nobody spoke.
That was the problem.
The evidence said one thing.
My instincts said another.
And after everything my family had done...
I knew better than anyone that the truth was rarely what it appeared to be.
Agent Carter crossed her arms.
"I agree something doesn't fit."
I looked at her.
"You do?"
She nodded.
"Yes."
Julian frowned.
"His authorization code was used."
"Exactly."
Carter replied.
"And that's the problem."
She opened another file.
"The code was authentic."
A pause.
"But the access happened after Admiral Reed was already under surveillance."
I looked at her.
"Meaning?"
"Meaning someone knew his code."
Silence.
Someone had stolen his identity.
Someone had framed him.
Someone wanted us to believe he betrayed us.
"Then where is he?"
I asked.
Carter looked away.
"We don't know."
That answer terrified me.
Because the Admiral was not someone who disappeared.
Not someone who ran.
Unless he had a reason.
We found him twelve hours later.
Not through intelligence.
Not through tracking.
Not through surveillance.
He found us.
The message came through a secure channel.
One sentence.
COME ALONE. YOU DESERVE THE TRUTH.
No name.
No location.
But I knew.
Julian immediately disagreed.
"No."
I looked at him.
"You knew I would go."
"Yes."
"Then you know you can't stop me."
His jaw tightened.
"That doesn't mean I have to like it."
I almost smiled.
Almost.
"Stay close."
He nodded.
"Always."
The meeting location was an abandoned naval warehouse near the coast.
A place filled with ghosts.
Just like everything connected to my family.
I entered alone.
At least...
that's what the Admiral thought.
Because Julian and Agent Carter were hidden nearby.
The lights flickered.
Then I saw him.
Admiral Reed.
Not in uniform.
No medals.
No authority.
Just a tired man standing in the shadows.
For a moment...
I saw the person who saved me.
Not the suspect.
Not the traitor.
The man.
"You came."
His voice was quiet.
"You knew I would."
A sad smile appeared.
"Yes."
I stopped several feet away.
"Did you help Arthur escape?"
He didn't answer.
That silence hurt.
"Admiral."
He looked at me.
"No."
The answer was immediate.
"I did not."
I wanted to believe him.
But wanting something had never made it true.
"Then explain."
He looked down.
"I was trying to protect you."
My expression hardened.
"Everyone says that."
"I know."
The words stopped me.
Because he understood.
He continued.
"Arthur was never the only target."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"He was supposed to be eliminated."
The warehouse became colder.
"Eliminated?"
The Admiral nodded.
"Someone wanted Arthur dead before he could testify."
"Who?"
His eyes met mine.
"The people behind the Ashford Initiative."
I waited.
"The people who built the system."
I remembered my grandfather's recording.
Power.
Control.
Sacrifice.
The empire existed before Arthur.
And it would exist after him.
"Then why frame you?"
I asked.
"Because I was the last witness."
A pause.
"And because I knew where your mother was."
My chest tightened.
"Someone wanted you gone."
The Admiral nodded.
"Yes."
He reached into his coat.
I immediately prepared myself.
But he removed only a small device.
A recording.
"I found this six years ago."
My eyes narrowed.
"Why didn't you show me?"
His expression broke.
"Because I made a mistake."
He activated the recording.
My mother's voice filled the warehouse.
"Jonathan..."
I froze.
She sounded younger.
Before everything broke.
"If you're hearing this, then Arthur has succeeded."
The Admiral looked away.
My mother continued.
"Do not tell Celeste the truth."
My heart stopped.
"Not yet."
The recording continued.
"She will try to fight."
A pause.
"And that is exactly what they want."
I looked at the Admiral.
"They?"
He nodded.
The recording continued.
"The people behind Arthur are not afraid of Celeste's strength."
"They are afraid of her choices."
Silence.
My mother's final words came.
"Because if Celeste knows the truth too soon..."
A pause.
"She will become exactly what they need her to become."
The recording ended.
I couldn't move.
"She wanted you to hide this from me."
The Admiral nodded.
"Yes."
"She wanted you to lie."
His eyes lowered.
"Yes."
The anger returned.
"You lied to me."
"I did."
"You let me hate you."
"Yes."
"You let me believe you betrayed me."
His voice cracked.
"Because I believed you would survive the hate."
That answer should have made me forgive him.
It didn't.
Because even good intentions could destroy people.
"You stole my choice."
The Admiral looked at me.
And for the first time...
he looked ashamed.
"Yes."
The warehouse shook.
A gunshot echoed outside.
Everyone reacted instantly.
Julian appeared from the shadows.
"Sniper!"
The window shattered.
The Admiral moved before I did.
He pushed me down.
The bullet struck him.
Everything stopped.
"Admiral!"
He collapsed.
Blood spread across his uniform.
I grabbed him.
"Stay with me."
His eyes opened slightly.
"Celeste..."
"Don't talk."
But he smiled.
A weak smile.
"You finally sound like your mother."
My eyes burned.
"You're not dying."
He looked toward Julian.
Then back at me.
"The truth..."
He struggled to breathe.
"The truth was never the weapon."
A pause.
"People were."
Agent Carter found the sniper's position.
Too late.
The shooter was gone.
But they left something behind.
A symbol carved into the wall.
The same symbol from Ashford Island.
The old Ashford crest.
But beneath it...
a new message.
THE HEIR MUST CHOOSE.
At the hospital, the Admiral survived.
Barely.
But before surgery, he gave me one final piece of information.
A name.
The person who ordered the assassination.
The person controlling the remains of the Ashford empire.
The person who had been watching me from the beginning.
He whispered:
"Celeste..."
I leaned closer.
"Who?"
His eyes opened.
And the answer destroyed everything I thought I knew.
"Your brother."
Nathan Ashford.
My younger brother.
The forgotten son.
The man everyone thought was too weak to matter.
The man who stood beside Arthur.
The man who always looked desperate for approval.
The man who had been invisible.
Until now.
I walked out of the hospital room in silence.
Because the final betrayal wasn't from the enemy.
It wasn't from my father.
It wasn't from the people who built the empire.
It came from someone who shared my blood.
My brother.
The person nobody suspected.
May you like
The last heir.
