CHAPTER 6 – THE INVESTIGATION BEGINS

CHAPTER 6 – THE INVESTIGATION BEGINS
The sound of breaking glass echoed through the quiet cottage.
For one heartbeat, everything became perfectly still.
Nora Bennett didn't panic.
Eight years in the Navy had taught her one unshakable rule.
Fear made noise. Training created silence.
She slipped the stack of letters, diaries, and financial ledgers into a canvas satchel and quietly zipped it shut.
Downstairs, slow footsteps crossed the hardwood floor.
One man.
Then another.
They weren't searching randomly.
They moved with purpose.
Someone had told them exactly what they were looking for.
Nora crouched beside the upstairs window.
The black SUV remained parked beside the road.
No license plates.
Professional.
She reached into her pocket and silently activated the emergency beacon built into her encrypted government phone.
The signal went directly to Agent Melissa Carter.
No conversation.
No ringtone.
Only one message.
Officer in danger. Active response requested.
She slipped the phone back into her jacket.
Then the voices began.
"Check the study."
"The old woman kept everything."
"Don't leave until you find the files."
Nora's eyes narrowed.
The old woman.
Not Margaret Bennett.
Not Mrs. Bennett.
Whoever sent them didn't know her.
Which meant they weren't family.
They were hired.
One of the men started climbing the staircase.
Each step creaked beneath heavy boots.
Nora quietly moved behind the bedroom door.
She picked up the solid brass lamp from the nightstand.
Not as a weapon.
As a distraction.
The footsteps stopped outside.
The doorknob slowly turned.
The man pushed the door open.
The room appeared empty.
He stepped inside.
At that exact moment—
Nora threw the lamp toward the opposite wall.
It crashed through a mirror.
Glass exploded across the floor.
The intruder instinctively turned toward the noise.
Nora slipped silently past him into the hallway.
By the time he realized someone had escaped...
She was already halfway down the back staircase.
Outside...
Blue lights suddenly flashed across the trees.
The black SUV's driver noticed them first.
"Federal agents!"
The warning came too late.
Three unmarked government vehicles slid to a stop in front of the cottage.
Doors flew open.
"Federal agents!"
"Nobody move!"
The two intruders sprinted toward the woods.
One disappeared into the darkness.
The other collided directly with Agent David Morales.
A brief struggle ended with steel handcuffs snapping into place.
Minutes later...
Agent Carter entered the cottage.
She found Nora standing calmly in the kitchen, still holding the canvas satchel.
"You all right?"
"I'm fine."
"You called at exactly the right time."
"I didn't call."
Nora showed her the emergency beacon.
Carter smiled faintly.
"I forgot we installed those."
Morales entered, breathing heavily.
"We caught one."
"The other escaped."
"What about the vehicle?"
"Stolen."
Professional.
Again.
The arrested intruder refused to answer questions.
He gave a false name.
Claimed he had wandered onto the property.
No one believed him.
Especially after agents recovered burglary tools, burner phones, and photographs of Margaret Bennett's cottage from his backpack.
Back at FBI Field Office Seattle...
The investigation officially changed status.
From Corporate Fraud...
To Criminal Conspiracy.
A large evidence board covered one wall.
Arthur Bennett.
Victor Langford.
Engineering reports.
Military contracts.
The submarine rescue explosion.
Anonymous letters.
Margaret Bennett's diaries.
Each thread connected to another.
Yet one question remained unanswered.
Who ordered the break-in?
Agent Carter gathered the task force.
"We're no longer investigating accounting fraud."
She pointed toward photographs from the cottage.
"Someone is actively trying to destroy evidence."
She turned toward Nora.
"I think it's time you told everyone what happened after you refused to sign those reports."
Every investigator looked toward her.
Nora took a slow breath.
"There was one meeting no one knows about."
Eight years earlier...
Three days after Arthur fired her...
Nora received a phone call.
Victor Langford.
Director of Procurement.
He sounded nervous.
"I think we should talk."
They met at a quiet marina café before sunrise.
Victor looked exhausted.
He hadn't slept.
"You were right," he admitted.
"They changed everything."
Nora remained silent.
"They're shipping defective cooling systems."
"I know."
He leaned forward.
"I kept copies."
She stared at him.
"You what?"
"I couldn't destroy them."
"Where are they?"
He hesitated.
"Safe."
Nora frowned.
"Then give them to investigators."
Victor looked over both shoulders.
"They'll kill me."
She almost laughed.
Until she realized...
He wasn't exaggerating.
Present Day.
Agent Carter interrupted.
"Did he ever give you the files?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"He never showed up again."
Morales searched the database.
"Victor Langford officially resigned six days later."
"He didn't resign."
Nora answered quietly.
"He disappeared."
Across town...
Arthur Bennett sat inside the executive boardroom of Bennett Maritime Systems.
The chairs surrounding him were mostly empty.
Several board members had already resigned.
Others refused to answer calls.
His attorney entered carrying a folder.
"We've located Victor Langford."
Arthur looked up sharply.
"Alive?"
"No."
Silence.
"He died seven years ago."
Arthur slowly leaned back.
"Cause?"
"Single-vehicle accident."
Arthur said nothing.
The attorney hesitated.
"There is one problem."
"What now?"
"The accident report was sealed."
Arthur's expression darkened.
"By whom?"
"The federal government."
Back at FBI headquarters...
A young forensic analyst rushed into the conference room.
"We recovered data from one of the burner phones."
Carter looked up.
"Anything useful?"
"It received only one incoming call before tonight."
"Trace it."
"We already did."
The room fell silent as the analyst projected a map onto the screen.
The call originated...
Not from Bennett Maritime.
Not from Victor Langford.
Not from Arthur Bennett.
It came from a private security company.
Blackstone Executive Protection.
Morales frowned.
"They don't hire burglars."
"No."
Carter answered.
"They hire former military contractors."
She turned toward Nora.
"Does that name mean anything?"
Nora studied the company logo.
Then something clicked.
"I've seen this before."
"Where?"
"South China Sea."
The room froze.
"It was printed on supply crates delivered to our rescue vessel..."
"...two weeks before the explosion."
No one spoke.
Agent Carter slowly connected another red thread across the evidence board.

Break-in at Margaret Bennett's Cottage
For years, investigators believed these were separate events.
Tonight...
They became one investigation.
Late that evening...
As Nora prepared to leave FBI headquarters, Agent Carter stopped her.
"There's something else."
She handed Nora a newly recovered document.
It had been found inside the arrested intruder's jacket.
A single sheet of paper.
No heading.
No signature.
Just one typed sentence.
Retrieve Margaret Bennett's letters before Commander Bennett learns about Project Trident.
Nora read it twice.
Then looked up.
"What is Project Trident?"
Carter slowly shook her head.
"We don't know."
She paused.
"But judging by how many people are willing to kill for it..."
"I think we're finally getting close to the real reason they tried to erase you."
Outside, another storm rolled over Seattle.
Inside the FBI headquarters, the investigation had finally moved beyond corruption.
It had uncovered the shadow of something far larger.
Something hidden for nearly a decade.
Something called...
May you like
Project Trident.
