Chapter 2

Chapter 2
The Wife They Humiliated
The hospital had a different kind of silence.
Not the peaceful silence of a sleeping home.
The kind of silence that comes after something terrible almost happens.
The kind where every sound feels too loud.
The beeping of machines.
The footsteps of nurses.
The distant voices behind closed doors.
And the one sound I couldn't forget...
My son's breathing.
I sat beside Frederick's hospital bed for six hours without moving.
My hand rested on his tiny fingers.
The same fingers that used to grab mine whenever he was scared.
Now they felt too small.
Too fragile.
A doctor had explained everything carefully.
"Frederick is severely dehydrated."
Those words still haunted me.
Severely.
Not slightly.
Not temporarily.
Severely.
"He has been under significant physical stress."
Physical stress.
Another phrase that sounded too professional for what my son had actually experienced.
My child had been suffering.
And nobody told me.
Amy sat in the corner of the room.
She had refused to leave Frederick's side.
But I noticed something.
She wasn't crying anymore.
At first, I thought she was being strong.
Then I realized the truth.
She was exhausted beyond tears.
Her body had reached a point where even breaking down required energy she no longer had.
I walked over.
"Amy."
She looked up.
Her eyes were empty.
Not because she didn't care.
Because she had cared too much for too long.
"I'm sorry."
The words came out before I could stop them.
Her expression changed.
"Connor..."
"I should have seen it."
She looked away.
"I should have told you."
"No."
I sat beside her.
"You should never have been put in a position where you were afraid to tell me."
Her lips trembled.
Then finally...
She cried.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just quietly.
The kind of crying someone does after holding everything inside for months.
"I tried."
She whispered.
I looked at her.
"With what?"
"With everything."
She wiped her face.
"Every time I complained, your mother said I wasn't grateful."
My chest tightened.
"Every time I asked for help, she reminded me that you paid for everything."
"She made me feel like I had no right to be tired."
I felt anger rising.
But I stayed quiet.
Because I needed to hear everything.
"At first, it was small."
Amy continued.
"She asked me to cook dinner when relatives visited."
"Then clean afterward."
"Then prepare their rooms."
"Then organize parties."
"Then watch everyone's children."
She laughed bitterly.
"I became the person everyone needed."
"But nobody cared what I needed."
I looked at my wife.
The woman who had stood beside me when I had nothing.
The woman who believed in me before I had success.
And I realized...
My family had taken advantage of the one person who never demanded anything from them.
"What about Frederick?"
I asked.
Amy's eyes filled with pain.
"Your mother said children needed discipline."
My hands tightened.
"What does that mean?"
"It means she decided when he ate."
Silence.
"She decided when he slept."
My heart stopped.
"She told him not to bother you because you were busy."
That sentence hurt the most.
Because Frederick had always been quiet.
Too quiet.
I thought he was growing up.
I thought he was becoming independent.
I didn't realize he was learning not to ask for help.
The next morning, the police returned.
Officer Daniels entered with a serious expression.
"Mr. Carter."
I stood.
"What did you find?"
He looked at Amy.
Then at me.
"We reviewed the evidence from the property."
"Evidence?"
He nodded.
"Your security cameras."
I had forgotten.
The house had cameras.
I installed them years ago after a neighborhood break-in.
I never thought they would reveal what happened inside my own family.
Officer Daniels placed a tablet on the table.
"We watched the footage from the past four months."
My stomach sank.
"Four months?"
He nodded.
"Mr. Carter..."
His voice became careful.
"What happened to your wife was not a misunderstanding."
The screen turned on.
The first video showed my mother.
Standing in my kitchen.
Talking to Amy.
Teresa's voice was clear.
"You should be thankful."
Amy looked exhausted.
"For what?"
"For the opportunity."
I stared at the screen.
Opportunity.
That was what she called using my wife.
Another video.
My relatives arriving.
Carrying bags.
Not visiting.
Moving in.
Another.
Mason opening my office door.
Searching through my files.
Another.
Teresa telling Amy:
"Don't bother Connor with family problems."
"He has important things to handle."
My blood ran cold.
Because they had built an entire system.
A system where Amy suffered silently...
And I remained unaware.
Then came the final recording.
The one that changed everything.
It was from the night before the party.
My mother.
Mason.
And several relatives.
Gathered in my living room.
Talking.
About me.
Teresa's voice:
"Connor will eventually understand."
Mason laughed.
"He always does what you tell him."
My mother's response froze me.
"That's because I raised him correctly."
Correctly.
That word stayed in my mind.
Because she wasn't proud of raising me.
She was proud of controlling me.
Then Mason opened a folder.
"We just need his signature."
My heart stopped.
Signature?
For what?
The recording continued.
Teresa said:
"Once the property transfer is complete, everything becomes easier."
The room went silent.
Even Officer Daniels looked disturbed.
I stared at Amy.
She looked just as shocked.
Because neither of us knew the full truth yet.
The house.
My house.
The place I bought with years of work.
The place where my son slept.
The place where Amy built our life.
They were trying to take it.
I stood up slowly.
"What happens now?"
Officer Daniels closed the tablet.
"Now we investigate."
I looked at my sleeping son.
Then at my wife.
Then back at the evidence.
For years, I thought my family needed me.
I was wrong.
They didn't need me.
They needed what I provided.
My money.
My home.
My protection.
But they made the biggest mistake possible.
They destroyed the person who gave them everything.
When I left the hospital that evening...
I did not go home.
Not yet.
Because for the first time in my life...
I was afraid of what I would find there.
And I knew one thing.
The woman my family humiliated...
May you like
Was about to become the reason they lost everything.
