Chapter 2 — The Secret Behind the Locked Door
The room became perfectly still.
Nathaniel's grip tightened on the doorknob until his knuckles turned white.
His father, Richard Ashcroft, stood only a few feet away from the bride.
One hand remained hidden behind his back.
The other still reached toward her.
"Get out," Richard said calmly.
"This is a private family matter."
Nathaniel didn't move.
He looked at his wife.
Emily sat on the edge of the bed, her wedding veil torn, tears streaming silently down her face.
Her hands shook so badly she could barely hold the shawl around her shoulders.
"What happened?" Nathaniel asked.
Emily opened her mouth.
No words came out.
Richard answered instead.
"She's overwhelmed."
"It's an emotional day."
Nathaniel took one step into the room.
"What are you hiding behind your back?"
Richard hesitated.
Then slowly revealed a small silver pistol.
Emily gasped.
"I told her," Richard said coldly, "that no one would believe the accusations of a frightened bride over the head of this family."
Nathaniel stared at his father in disbelief.
"You threatened her?"
May you like
Richard's expression never changed.
"I protected this family."
