Lucy regained consciousness three days later.
Alex was waiting outside her room.
She asked the nurse to let him in.
He entered quietly.
Placed the wedding ring on her bedside table.
"I failed you."
She looked at the ring.
"You did."
"I thought Valerie was in immediate danger."
Lucy nodded slowly.
"I know."
She looked into his eyes.
"But you never even looked for me."
That sentence hurt more than any investigation.
"I kept believing your promises," she whispered.
"Until I watched your boots walk past me."
