CHAPTER 8 — THE TRAP

CHAPTER 8 — THE TRAP

The abandoned Caldwell property stood at the edge of the valley like a dead thing refusing to disappear.

No lights.

No workers.

No security vehicles.

Just an enormous stone house surrounded by overgrown vines and trees twisted by years of neglect.

The location had come through an encrypted message.

DANIEL RIVERS — INSIDE.

Maya sat beside me in the car.

Ryan was somewhere behind us with the investigators.

Rebecca had insisted we wait for backup.

I refused.

Not because I wanted to be reckless.

Because I knew exactly what Charles wanted.

He wanted time.

Time to move Daniel.

Time to destroy evidence.

Time to disappear.

And after twenty years of waiting, I wasn't giving him another minute.

Maya stared at the house.

“Something is wrong.”

“I know.”

“There are no guards.”

“I know.”

“No cameras.”

“I know.”

She turned toward me.

“Then why are we here?”

I looked at the dark windows.

“Because they want us here.”

A strange silence followed.

Maya whispered:

“It's a trap.”

“Yes.”

“Then why walk into it?”

I opened the car door.

“Because sometimes the only way to catch the person setting the trap…”

I stepped outside.

“…is to let them think it worked.”

The Empty House

The front door opened before we touched it.

Maya stopped.

“Claire.”

“I see it.”

The door was unlocked.

Inside, the house smelled like dust and damp wood.

Our footsteps echoed through the empty hallway.

No furniture.

No photographs.

No signs that anyone had lived there recently.

Then we heard a noise.

A chair scraping across the floor.

Maya grabbed my arm.

“Daniel?”

We followed the sound.

It came from the dining room.

A single chair sat in the middle.

On it was a photograph.

I picked it up.

It showed me at twenty-seven.

The year I met Adrian.

On the back were three words.

YOU WERE SELECTED.

Maya looked at me.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

A speaker crackled overhead.

Then Adrian's voice filled the room.

“You always were curious, Claire.”

Maya's face hardened.

“Where is he?”

Adrian laughed.

“You mean Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“You'll see him soon.”

“Where?”

“Keep walking.”

I looked at Maya.

The voice continued.

“Down the hallway.”

“Second door.”

“Don't worry.”

“You're safe.”

I almost smiled.

“That's exactly what someone says before something goes terribly wrong.”

The Second Door

The hallway was long.

At the end stood a steel door.

I opened it.

A staircase descended underground.

Maya whispered:

“This looks like the vault.”

“It's not.”

“How do you know?”

“Because my father designed the vault.”

“And?”

“This is a copy.”

We descended.

At the bottom was a narrow corridor.

Lights turned on one by one as we walked.

Then we reached a room.

Daniel Rivers was sitting in a chair.

Older.

Thin.

His hair completely gray.

But alive.

Maya gasped.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

Then at me.

And his eyes filled with tears.

“Thomas's daughter.”

I froze.

“You knew my father.”

“I knew him better than anyone.”

“What happened to him?”

Daniel lowered his head.

“He trusted Charles.”

“So did you.”

“Yes.”

“And he died because of it.”

Daniel looked at me.

“No.”

His voice was barely audible.

“Your father died because he trusted someone else.”

I felt a chill.

“Who?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Maya stepped closer.

“Where is Ryan?”

“Safe.”

“And Noah?”

“Safe.”

“Then why are we here?”

Daniel looked at the camera in the corner.

“Because this room isn't for me.”

I turned.

“What?”

He pointed toward the wall.

A red light began blinking.

“This room is for you.”

The Door Locked

The steel door slammed shut.

Maya ran toward it.

“Claire!”

I pulled the handle.

Locked.

A speaker crackled.

Adrian's voice returned.

“Welcome home.”

I stared at the camera.

“You're not here.”

“No.”

“Then you're a coward.”

He laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

“Explain it.”

“I don't need to be there.”

“Why?”

“Because you've already done everything I needed.”

I looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

“What did you do?”

Adrian continued.

“You came here voluntarily.”

“You entered a private Caldwell property.”

“You brought evidence.”

“And you brought Maya.”

My stomach tightened.

“What evidence?”

“Your father's documents.”

The vault.

I suddenly understood.

“You wanted us to take the documents.”

“Exactly.”

“Why?”

“Because now I can claim you stole them.”

I laughed.

“You think anyone will believe that?”

“They don't have to.”

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

A police report.

It claimed I had broken into the property.

Stolen confidential corporate records.

Threatened employees.

And assaulted Adrian's father.

My face went cold.

“This is fake.”

“Maybe.”

“But it looks real.”

I stared at the screen.

Then at Daniel.

“You recorded everything.”

Adrian laughed.

“You're finally catching up.”

The Real Trap

I turned toward Daniel.

“You knew.”

He looked devastated.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since yesterday.”

“You knew they were setting this up.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you warn me?”

“Because they threatened Noah.”

Maya stepped between us.

“You used my son?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I had no choice.”

Maya's voice shook.

“There is always a choice.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Not when they have your grandson.”

The room fell silent.

Then I noticed something.

A small red light under the table.

Recording equipment.

I walked toward it.

“Everything we're saying is being recorded.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

I smiled.

“Good.”

He looked at me.

“What?”

I pointed toward the camera.

“They think the recording belongs to them.”

“But it doesn't.”

I pulled out my phone.

Rebecca had installed a secure recording application.

It had been running since we entered.

I held it up.

“They're recording us.”

“We're recording them.”

Daniel stared at me.

For the first time, hope appeared in his eyes.

The Woman Behind Adrian

I looked at the camera.

“Adrian.”

Silence.

“I know you're watching.”

Nothing.

“You want the evidence?”

“Yes.”

“Then come get it.”

A pause.

“You think I'm stupid?”

“No.”

“I think you're scared.”

The speaker clicked.

“You're playing a dangerous game.”

“I've been playing your game for seven years.”

“Then you should know how it ends.”

I smiled.

“No.”

“You should.”

“Because you're going to lose.”

Silence.

Then Adrian said:

“You still haven't figured out why I married you.”

My smile disappeared.

“What?”

“You think it was about your condo.”

“No.”

“You think it was about your money.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

He paused.

“Your father.”

I looked at Daniel.

Adrian continued.

“Your father left something behind.”

“The company.”

“No.”

“The vault.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

A long pause.

Then:

“You.”

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?”

“You weren't just his daughter.”

“You were his insurance policy.”

The Truth About My Marriage

Adrian's voice became quieter.

“Your father knew Charles would eventually discover the succession clause.”

“So?”

“He needed someone Charles couldn't control.”

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“He knew you would grow up outside the company.”

“Why?”

“Because Charles wouldn't know where to find the successor.”

I felt sick.

“Then why did you find me?”

“I was looking for you.”

“When?”

“Before you met me.”

I stared at the speaker.

“You knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“Before our first date?”

“Yes.”

“Before you proposed?”

“Yes.”

“Before we married?”

“Yes.”

I felt something inside me break.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

Every moment I had believed was real.

“You were assigned to me.”

Silence.

Then Adrian answered:

“Yes.”

Maya whispered:

“Claire…”

I didn't hear her.

I only heard Adrian.

“My job was simple.”

“Marry you.”

“Gain access to your finances.”

“Find the succession documents.”

“And make sure you never discovered who you really were.”

I closed my eyes.

Seven years.

Seven years of my life.

A lie.

The Part Adrian Didn't Know

I looked at Daniel.

“Is that true?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your father suspected they would come for you.”

“So he used Adrian to protect me?”

“No.”

I frowned.

“Then why?”

Daniel took a breath.

“Your father didn't choose Adrian.”

“Who did?”

“Charles.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Charles selected Adrian.”

“Why would Charles marry his own son to me?”

“Because Charles thought you were weak.”

“He was wrong.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at me.

“But there was something Charles didn't know.”

“What?”

“Your father had already transferred the controlling rights.”

“To me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't Charles know?”

“Because the transfer was encrypted.”

“Where is the key?”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“You've had it for years.”

I looked at the metal key in my hand.

“This?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Your mother's wedding ring.”

My heart stopped.

My Mother's Ring

I called my mother.

She answered immediately.

“Claire?”

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“I need your ring.”

Silence.

“Why?”

“Dad hid the final key inside it.”

My mother began crying.

“You found out.”

“Yes.”

“I was hoping you never would.”

“Why?”

“Because once you knew…”

She stopped.

“Mom?”

“You would become the target.”

I looked at the camera.

“I'm already the target.”

A long pause.

Then she said:

“I'll bring it.”

“Where are you?”

“Not far.”

“How long?”

“Twenty minutes.”

I hung up.

Daniel looked at me.

“Your mother is coming here.”

“Yes.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“What?”

“She can't.”

“Why?”

“Because Charles knows she's coming.”

I froze.

“How?”

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

“He knows everything.”

The Power Goes Out

The lights suddenly disappeared.

Darkness.

Maya grabbed my hand.

“Claire.”

“I know.”

A door slammed somewhere above us.

Then footsteps.

Several people.

Coming downstairs.

Daniel whispered:

“They're here.”

I pulled out my phone.

No signal.

Of course.

The trap had been designed perfectly.

We were underground.

Locked inside.

Surrounded.

And Adrian wasn't even here.

A light appeared at the end of the corridor.

Then another.

Men approached.

Black suits.

No uniforms.

No badges.

The first man stepped into the room.

I recognized him.

Charles Caldwell's head of security.

He smiled.

“Mrs. Caldwell.”

I corrected him.

“Bennett.”

He smiled wider.

“Not for long.”

Behind him stood four men.

Maya moved closer to Daniel.

The security chief looked at me.

“Give us the documents.”

“No.”

“Then this gets unpleasant.”

“You already attacked me once.”

“This time there won't be witnesses.”

I looked at the camera.

Then smiled.

“There are witnesses.”

He frowned.

I lifted my phone.

“Everything is being streamed.”

He stared at me.

“That isn't possible.”

“It is.”

He looked toward the camera.

Then toward the ceiling.

Panic appeared in his eyes.

I smiled.

“You made one mistake.”

“What?”

“You assumed I was trapped.”

I took one step forward.

“You forgot I walked in here knowing it was a trap.”

The Door Opens

A loud explosion shook the corridor.

Everyone froze.

Then another.

The steel door at the top of the staircase burst open.

Police officers flooded the building.

“DROP YOUR WEAPONS!”

The security men turned.

Chaos erupted.

Maya pulled Daniel to the floor.

I crouched beside them.

Within seconds, the room was filled with shouting.

Hands were raised.

Weapons dropped.

Men were handcuffed.

Then Rebecca appeared at the doorway.

She looked at me.

“You really couldn't wait for backup?”

I laughed.

“I knew you were coming.”

“You hoped.”

“Yes.”

She shook her head.

“Never do that again.”

“No promises.”

Then she handed me her phone.

“There's something you need to see.”

A live news broadcast was playing.

The headline filled the screen.

CALDWELL DEVELOPMENT FACING MASSIVE FRAUD INVESTIGATION

I stared.

“What happened?”

Rebecca smiled.

“The vault files were uploaded.”

“By whom?”

She looked at me.

“You.”

I frowned.

“I didn't upload anything.”

“No.”

She pointed toward the screen.

“Your father did.”

The Final Recording

A video appeared.

My father's face.

The recording from the vault.

But this time, it wasn't old footage.

It was a message scheduled decades earlier.

“If you're seeing this,” my father said, “the Caldwell system has begun collapsing.”

I stared at the screen.

“The person who destroys the system will not be me.”

“She will be my daughter.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“Claire, I know you'll be afraid.”

“But don't run.”

“Don't hide.”

“Don't negotiate with people who believe your silence belongs to them.”

He smiled faintly.

“Say no.”

“Then say it again.”

“Until they finally understand.”

The video ended.

I stood in silence.

For years, I had thought my father left me nothing.

He had left me the truth.

And now the truth was free.

The Message

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One final message.

YOU WON THE FIRST ROUND.

Then another.

BUT YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHO KILLED YOUR FATHER.

I stared at the screen.

Then a third message appeared.

ASK ADRIAN.

I looked toward the arrested men.

Adrian wasn't among them.

He had escaped.

But the message told me something else.

He knew who killed my father.

And if he knew…

then Adrian had been lying about one final thing.

He hadn't married me simply because Charles ordered him to.

He had a personal reason.

A secret reason.

A reason powerful enough to destroy everything.

I looked at Maya.

“Where is Adrian?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Rebecca checked her phone.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“Someone just sent us coordinates.”

“From whom?”

She looked at the screen.

“Adrian.”

I stared at the location.

It was an old church.

The same church where my father and mother had been married.

I felt a chill.

Rebecca looked at me.

“You don't have to go.”

I slipped my father's key into my pocket.

“Yes.”

“I do.”

“Why?”

I looked toward the dark corridor.

“Because this time…”

I tightened my grip.

“…I'm not going there to escape a trap.”

“I'm going there to hear the truth.”

And somewhere in the distance, Adrian was waiting.

Not as my husband.

May you like

Not as Charles Caldwell's son.

But as the only man left alive who knew what really happened on the night my father died.
