Chapter 2: The Call That Changed Everything

The apartment filled with the sound of distant sirens.

Clare remained on the floor, clutching the phone against her chest while her father's calm voice guided her through every breath.

"You stay with me," Richard Sterling said. "Help is almost there."

Within minutes, paramedics forced open the penthouse door alongside private security hired by the Sterling family. The lead medic knelt beside Clare, his expression tightening as he examined the bruises spreading across her back and arms.

"We're taking her now."

As they wheeled her toward the elevator, Richard arrived.

For seven years, pride had kept father and daughter apart.

That night, none of it mattered.

He walked beside the stretcher without saying a word. When Clare reached for his hand, he held it tightly.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

Richard shook his head.

"You survived. That's all I care about."

Matthew returned home two hours later expecting silence.

Instead, detectives were waiting in the lobby.

"Matthew Hayes?"

"Yes?"

"You're being questioned regarding a reported domestic assault."

His confident smile disappeared.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

"There are medical reports, photographs, and security footage from your building."

His face drained of color.

"The victim has also provided a statement."

For the first time in years, Matthew realized he could not talk his way out of what he had done.

News spread quickly through the executive offices of NexusCore.

The board placed Matthew on immediate administrative leave pending investigation.

Several directors privately admitted they had ignored warning signs for years—his temper, his intimidation, the unusually high turnover among senior staff.
