Chapter 1: The Voice That Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Voice That Changed Everything
The speaker crackled.
Then came my father's calm, unmistakable voice.
"Emma?"
The little girl sobbed.
"Grandpa... Daddy hurt Mommy."
Silence.
Not confusion.
Not disbelief.
Just silence.
Then my father spoke again.
"Sweetheart, stay where you are."
"Don't hang up."
"I'm coming."
The line ended.
David lunged toward the phone, but it was too late.
He looked at me, then at the front windows.
"How much did she tell him?"
I didn't answer.
For the first time since I had known him...
He wasn't angry.
He was frightened.
Margaret stood abruptly.
"David."
"You need to think."
"We can still explain this."
David nodded desperately.
"She fell."
"That's what happened."
Margaret turned to me.
"You understand, don't you?"
"If this becomes public..."
"It destroys everyone."
I laughed.
A weak, painful laugh.
"No."
"It destroys you."
Less than ten minutes later...
The mansion gates swung open.
Three black SUVs rolled onto the driveway.
Not one.
Three.
My father stepped out first.
Behind him came two family attorneys.
And several private security officers.
The front door wasn't knocked on.
It was opened.
My father crossed the marble floor until he reached me.
His eyes fell to my twisted leg.
Then to the bruise already darkening across my face.
He removed his jacket.
Covered me gently.
Only then did he look at David.
May you like
"I trusted you with my daughter."
"You mistook that trust for permission."
