CHAPTER 8: The Last Manipulation

CHAPTER 8: The Last Manipulation

The hardest battles were not the ones fought with enemies.

They were the ones fought with doubt.

Because anger was easy.

Betrayal was obvious.

But doubt?

Doubt entered quietly.

It whispered.

It asked questions.

It created shadows where there had once been certainty.

And Lorraine knew that.

She had spent her entire life understanding one thing:

People could survive pain.

But they struggled to survive uncertainty.

Ethan sat awake long after midnight.

The cabin was completely silent.

Everyone was sleeping.

Everyone except him.

The message from Lorraine remained on his phone.

Ask Sophie about the night before your wedding.

He hated that one sentence had affected him.

Not because he believed his mother.

But because he knew there was a reason she chose those words.

Lorraine was not careless.

She didn't throw random accusations.

She studied people.

She remembered weaknesses.

She waited for the right moment.

And now she had chosen the moment when Ethan was already exhausted.

Already hurt.

Already questioning everything he thought he knew.

The next morning, Sophie found him staring at his coffee.

"You didn't sleep."

It wasn't a question.

Ethan looked up.

"I'm sorry."

"Why?"

He hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Sophie noticed.

"What happened?"

Ethan looked away.

For a second, he considered saying nothing.

Protecting her.

Protecting their peace.

But he had promised himself something.

No more secrets.

No more pretending everything was fine.

"I got another message from my mother."

Sophie's expression changed.

"What did she say?"

Ethan unlocked his phone and showed her.

She read it.

The color slowly disappeared from her face.

Not because she was guilty.

Because she knew exactly what Lorraine was trying to do.

"What?"

Ethan looked at her carefully.

"You know what she's talking about?"

Sophie was quiet.

Too quiet.

And that silence hurt.

Not because it proved anything.

Because it reminded him of every secret Lorraine had already exposed.

"Before we got married..."

Sophie sat down.

"Ethan..."

"I need to know."

She looked at him.

And for the first time in years, Ethan saw fear in her eyes.

Not fear of him.

Fear of losing him.

"Two weeks before our wedding," Sophie said slowly, "something happened."

Ethan waited.

"I received a letter."

"What kind of letter?"

"From someone who knew me before."

His eyebrows tightened.

"Who?"

She looked down.

"My ex-fiancé."

The room became silent.

Ethan didn't move.

He knew Sophie had a past.

Everyone did.

But hearing the words still felt like a door opening to a room he had never seen.

"Ex-fiancé?"

Sophie nodded.

"I never told you because..."

She stopped.

"Because what?"

"Because I was embarrassed."

Ethan remained quiet.

She continued.

"Before I met you, I was engaged."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because it ended badly."

She took a breath.

"I thought it was part of my past. Something that didn't matter anymore."

Ethan looked at her.

"What did he want?"

Sophie closed her eyes.

"He wanted me back."

For several moments, Ethan said nothing.

Not because he was angry.

Because he was processing.

The woman he loved had a secret.

But the question was:

Was it a secret because she wanted to hide something?

Or because she was afraid of being judged?

"Sophie."

She looked up.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because I was afraid you would look at me differently."

That answer hurt him.

Because suddenly he understood.

Lorraine had chosen this secret because she knew exactly what Sophie feared.

Rejection.

"Did you respond?"

Sophie shook her head.

"No."

"Did you meet him?"

"No."

"Did anything happen?"

"No."

Her voice became stronger.

"Nothing."

Ethan watched her.

And he believed her.

Because he knew Sophie.

But he also knew Lorraine.

And suddenly he understood the game.

Lorraine wasn't trying to reveal a betrayal.

She was trying to make Ethan question a loyal person.

"Why didn't you tell me before?"

Sophie wiped her tears.

"Because I wanted our marriage to start with happiness."

A pause.

"And because I knew your mother already thought I wasn't good enough."

Ethan froze.

"What?"

Sophie looked away.

"She knew."

"How?"

"She found out before our wedding."

The room became cold.

"What do you mean?"

Sophie swallowed.

"She contacted me."

Ethan stared.

"What did she say?"

Sophie's voice became quiet.

"She told me that if I really loved you, I would leave."

His hands tightened.

"She said you deserved someone who didn't bring complications into your life."

Ethan felt anger rising.

Not the explosive anger from before.

Something deeper.

Older.

Pain.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I thought I could handle it."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"I thought if I was patient enough, kind enough, helpful enough..."

She looked at him.

"Eventually she would accept me."

Ethan stood.

Not because he was angry at Sophie.

Because he finally understood the full picture.

Lorraine had been fighting this marriage from the beginning.

That afternoon, Ethan confronted his mother.

Not with anger.

Not with accusations.

With one question.

"How long were you planning to use this?"

Lorraine was silent.

They were speaking over the phone.

"What are you talking about?"

"You know exactly what I'm talking about."

A pause.

Then Lorraine sighed.

"I was trying to protect you."

Ethan laughed softly.

A tired laugh.

"Protect me?"

"Yes."

"By attacking my wife?"

"By showing you the truth."

"The truth?"

His voice became colder.

"The truth is that you have spent years looking for reasons to distrust the people who love me."

Lorraine became defensive.

"I only wanted the best for you."

"No."

A pause.

"You wanted the version of me that needed you."

Silence.

The sentence hit harder than any insult.

Because deep down...

Lorraine knew it was true.

Then Lorraine made her final move.

"You want to know something else?"

Ethan said nothing.

"I have proof."

"Proof of what?"

"That Sophie wasn't honest with you."

Ethan frowned.

"What proof?"

"I have documents."

His stomach tightened.

"What documents?"

Lorraine smiled through the phone.

"You'll find out soon."

Then she hung up.

Two hours later, an envelope arrived at the cabin.

No return address.

No name.

Inside were photographs.

Old photographs.

Ethan looked through them.

Then froze.

Because one picture showed Sophie.

Years before they met.

Standing beside someone he didn't recognize.

A man.

Holding her hand.

On the back of the photo was a handwritten date.

The date was one week before Ethan and Sophie first met.

His heart sank.

Not because he thought Sophie had betrayed him.

But because he realized something.

Lorraine had been collecting information for years.

Waiting.

Preparing.

Building a weapon.

A weapon she could use whenever Ethan stopped obeying.

Sophie walked into the room.

She saw the photographs.

And immediately went pale.

"Ethan..."

He looked at her.

"Who is he?"

Her lips trembled.

Because this time...

There was a truth she had never told him.

May you like

A truth even Lorraine didn't know.

And it would change everything.
