CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2
The Woman in My Bathroom
The first thing I noticed was the sound.
Not the voices.
Not the laughter.
Not the movement of water.
The sound.
A soft, careless sound.
Someone humming.
Inside my bathroom.
My bathroom.
The room I had designed with my own hands.
The room where Julian once told me he wanted to grow old with me.
The room where I had spent countless evenings soaking in the jacuzzi after exhausting days building a company.
The room where I had believed my marriage was safe.
I stood at the end of the hallway, frozen.
The anniversary candles I had carried upstairs were still in my hands.
I had planned a surprise.
A ridiculous, romantic surprise.
I had imagined Julian coming home after work and finding the bathroom filled with flowers, candles, and the expensive watch I bought him hidden beside the tub.
I had imagined his face.
I had imagined him smiling.
I had imagined him saying:
"Harper, I don't deserve you."
The cruelest thing about betrayal is that the person who hurts you does not know what moment they are destroying.
For Julian, it was probably just another secret.
Another lie.
Another selfish decision.
For me...
it was the exact moment ten years of memories collapsed.
I don't know how long I stood there.
Maybe thirty seconds.
Maybe five minutes.
Time becomes strange when your brain refuses to accept what your eyes are seeing.
The bathroom door was slightly open.
Not locked.
Not even carefully closed.
That detail hurt more than I expected.
Because it meant they weren't afraid.
They weren't worried.
They weren't thinking about me.
They were comfortable.
In my home.
In my bathroom.
In my marriage.
I pushed the door open.
Slowly.
And there they were.
Julian.
My husband.
The man who promised me forever.
And Mia.
The young woman I had welcomed into my home.
They were sitting in the jacuzzi.
The same jacuzzi I designed.
The same place where Julian had kissed me after we moved into the house.
The same place where we celebrated our anniversary every year.
Except this time...
I wasn't there.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Mia looked at me first.
Her face changed immediately.
Fear.
Guilt.
Shock.
But Julian...
Julian looked angry.
Not guilty.
Angry.
That was the part I would remember forever.
Not the betrayal.
Not even the affair.
The anger.
The way he looked at me like I had interrupted something.
Like I was the problem.
"Harper."
My name left his mouth like a warning.
I stared at him.
I waited.
I waited for an explanation.
A confession.
Anything.
But nothing came.
The man who had once memorized my favorite song couldn't even find the courage to apologize.
"How long?"
My voice sounded strange.
Calm.
Almost emotionless.
Julian looked away.
That was my answer.
Mia immediately started crying.
"I'm sorry."
I looked at her.
Really looked at her.
The same girl I had helped.
The same girl whose first winter coat I bought.
The same girl who once hugged me and said she would never forget my kindness.
I wanted to understand.
I wanted to believe there was some explanation.
Some misunderstanding.
But there wasn't.
Because I saw the way she looked at Julian.
Not fear.
Not confusion.
Love.
Or what she thought was love.
"You called me family."
Her voice shook.
I said nothing.
"You said I could come to you if I needed anything."
I laughed softly.
A sound without happiness.
"I did."
A pause.
"I meant clothes."
My eyes moved to Julian.
"Not my husband."
Mia looked down.
Julian stood up.
"Enough."
I looked at him.
"Enough?"
His jaw tightened.
"This isn't how we should handle this."
I almost smiled.
Almost.
Because somehow, after everything, he was still trying to control the situation.
"How should we handle it, Julian?"
No answer.
"Should I schedule a meeting?"
I tilted my head.
"Should I send an email?"
Silence.
"Maybe a formal appointment where you explain why my husband is in my bathtub with the woman I hired?"
His face darkened.
"You are making this worse."
Those words cut deeper than I expected.
Not because they were cruel.
Because they revealed everything.
He wasn't sorry.
He was frustrated.
Frustrated that I knew.
I walked away.
That was the first thing that surprised them.
They expected screaming.
They expected tears.
They expected me to collapse.
They knew me as the woman who forgave.
The woman who gave chances.
The woman who fixed problems.
They didn't know the woman who had just realized there was nothing left to save.
I went downstairs.
I sat at the kitchen island.
And I stared at the house.
Our house.
The house I built.
The house I paid for.
The house where I had created a life.
Funny how quickly a home can become a crime scene.
Julian followed me twenty minutes later.
He had changed clothes.
Of course he had.
He looked more like my husband again.
That was almost worse.
Because the man standing in front of me looked familiar.
The man upstairs didn't.
"Harper."
I didn't look up.
"What?"
He sighed.
"Can we talk?"
I finally looked at him.
"Talk about what?"
His expression hardened.
"About what happened."
I smiled.
"Something happened?"
He stared.
"You know what I mean."
"No."
I stood.
"I don't."
I walked closer.
"Tell me."
He was silent.
"Tell me what happened."
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Because saying it aloud would make it real.
"You cheated on me."
The words landed between us.
"You brought another woman into our home."
Another step.
"You betrayed me."
Another.
"And now you want to talk?"
Julian looked uncomfortable.
That was new.
For years, he had been the confident one.
The charming one.
The man who always knew what to say.
Now he had nothing.
Then he said something I never expected.
"Things haven't been good between us for a long time."
I stared.
For a moment, I actually thought I heard him wrong.
"What?"
He ran a hand through his hair.
"I'm just saying the truth."
"The truth?"
"Yes."
He looked at me.
"You were always working."
I froze.
"I built my company."
"And I supported you."
"No."
His voice became sharper.
"You built a life where there was no room for me."
I stared at him.
The audacity was almost unbelievable.
"You mean there was no room for you to betray me?"
His face changed.
"I didn't say that."
"You didn't have to."
That night, Julian slept in the guest room.
Not because I asked.
Because he didn't know what else to do.
Mia was gone.
At least temporarily.
But the damage remained.
The next morning, I woke up and did something I hadn't done in years.
I ignored my husband.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed to hear my own thoughts.
For ten years, my life had revolved around Julian.
His schedule.
His needs.
His family.
His feelings.
Now, for the first time...
I asked myself a question.
Who was Harper Caldwell without him?
At noon, I received a call from my attorney.
A woman named Rachel Morgan.
I had used her before for business contracts.
She was brilliant.
Direct.
Impossible to intimidate.
"Harper."
Her voice changed when she heard mine.
"What happened?"
I looked around my office.
The place I built.
The thing I created before Julian became the center of my world.
"I need you to review my marriage documents."
A pause.
"Harper..."
"I need to know exactly what belongs to me."
Another pause.
Then her voice became serious.
"Are you sure?"
I looked out the window.
At the city below.
At the life I created.
At the woman I used to be.
"Yes."
Because something inside me had changed.
The woman who walked into that bathroom was a wife.
The woman sitting in my office was someone else.
Someone colder.
Someone clearer.
Someone who finally understood:
I didn't lose my marriage when I opened that door.
I lost it years earlier.
I just didn't know it yet.
That evening, I returned home.
Julian was waiting.
"We need to talk."
I looked at him.
For the first time, I noticed something.
He looked afraid.
Not sorry.
Afraid.
And I knew why.
Because Julian Caldwell had spent ten years believing he was the reason I succeeded.
He forgot something important.
I succeeded before him.
And I could succeed after him.
"I know about the affair," I said.
He swallowed.
"I know about Mia."
Silence.
"But I also know something else."
"What?"
I walked past him.
"I know who I am without you."
And that scared him more than any accusation ever could.
Because for the first time in ten years...
Julian realized something.
The woman he betrayed...
May you like
was not the woman he thought he could destroy.
