Chapter 2: The Price of Betrayal

Chapter 2: The Price of Betrayal

Three weeks later, Mason's empire was collapsing faster than anyone imagined.

Construction on two luxury hotels stopped overnight.

Suppliers demanded payment.

Investors withdrew.

The board of Whitmore Hospitality held an emergency meeting.

For the first time since founding the company, Mason was asked to resign.

Even Madison began distancing herself.

The glamorous secretary who had proudly stood beside him at the hotel opening quietly accepted a position with another developer.

Before leaving, she walked into Mason's office.

"I never expected this."

Mason laughed bitterly.

"You expected my wife to disappear."

Madison said nothing.

She simply left.

Days later, Mason requested a meeting with Evelyn.

She agreed—but only in the conference room of Harper Blackwood Ventures, surrounded by attorneys.

When Mason entered, he barely resembled the confident entrepreneur from the hotel opening.

His expensive suit hung loosely from tired shoulders.

Dark circles framed his eyes.

"Evelyn..."

She looked at him calmly.

"You wanted to speak."

"I'm sorry."

She remained silent.

"I was arrogant. I believed the success was mine. I confused confidence with entitlement. I confused loyalty with weakness."

"You also confused love with ownership," Evelyn replied.

He lowered his head.

"I know."

"I never cared whether you became rich, Mason. I cared whether you remained kind."

Tears filled his eyes.

"I'd give everything to start over."

Evelyn gently pushed the divorce agreement across the table.

"You already did."

He signed without another word.

As he walked away, he realized he had not merely lost his marriage.

He had lost the only person who had believed in him before anyone else did.
