Chapter 3 — The Truth They Buried

Chapter 3 — The Truth They Buried
Vanessa turned to Ryan.
"You told me she couldn't have children."
Ryan couldn't answer.
Rebecca spoke instead.
"She couldn't!"
I calmly opened my handbag.
Inside was a thick medical file.
"I believed that too."
I handed the documents to the officiant.
Then to Vanessa.
Then to Ryan.
"Read."
Years of medical records.
Misdiagnoses.
Surgery reports.
The final specialist's conclusion.
Patient's infertility caused by untreated endometriosis. Husband shows normal fertility. Pregnancy achieved following successful treatment.
Ryan's hands shook.
"I never knew..."
"No."
"You never asked."
I took one slow step closer.
"The morning I found out I was pregnant..."
"I came home to tell you."
His eyes widened.
"I found my suitcase waiting outside."
Rebecca tried to interrupt.
"You should have told us!"
I looked directly at her.
"When?"
"Before you called me a failure?"
"Or after you replaced me with another woman?"
She lowered her eyes.
For the first time in eleven years...
She had nothing to say.
Vanessa quietly removed her engagement ring.
She looked at Ryan.
"You threw away your pregnant wife..."
"...because your mother convinced you she was broken."
Ryan reached for her.
"Vanessa..."
She stepped back.
"If you could abandon the woman who stood beside you for eleven years..."
"...what makes you think you wouldn't abandon me someday?"
She placed the ring on the altar.
"I'm done."
Without another word...

She walked away.
Half the guests quietly followed.
