Chapter 3 — The Empire of Lies

Chapter 3 — The Empire of Lies
Two months later...
My baby survived.
So did I.
The bruises faded.
The betrayal didn't.
Ryan was arrested on charges of fraud, identity theft, financial abuse, and domestic violence.
The video he had proudly recorded became the prosecution's strongest evidence.
It showed everything.
His laughter.
His insults.
And the exact moment Linda shoved me down the stairs.
Neither of them realized the phone had never stopped recording.
Linda was charged as an accomplice.
Richard, Ryan's father, accepted a plea deal after admitting he had known about the stolen money.
One by one...
The lies collapsed.
Meanwhile, the Langford family quietly recovered nearly every stolen asset.
The shell companies were dissolved.
Luxury cars were repossessed.
Their mansion was seized.
Everything Ryan believed he owned had been purchased with money that had never belonged to him.
On the first day of the trial...
Ryan looked across the courtroom.
"I loved you."
I met his eyes.
"No."
"You loved what I could give you."
"You stopped loving me the day you thought I had nothing left to offer."
He lowered his head.
For the first time...
He had no audience.
No camera.
No performance.
Only consequences.
The jury needed less than three hours.
Guilty on every major count.
As deputies led him away in handcuffs...
He whispered,
"I'm sorry."

I didn't answer.
Some apologies arrive only after the price has been paid.
