The room was silent.
Adrian smirked as Isabella lowered her phone.
"That's it?" he asked. "You called your father?"
Vanessa laughed.
"What is he going to do? Fly here and scold us?"
Isabella didn't answer.
She simply sat upright despite the pain.
Five minutes later, every phone in the room vibrated.
Adrian frowned and glanced at his screen.
His smile vanished.
The notification read:
Emergency Board Resolution: Effective immediately, Adrian Vale is suspended as Chief Executive Officer pending investigation for financial misconduct and abuse of corporate authority.
"What..."
His phone rang again.
Then again.
His chief financial officer.
The company's legal counsel.
His private banker.
He answered the first call.
"No, this has to be a mistake."
A pause.
"What do you mean the accounts are frozen?"
His face drained of color.
Across the room, Vanessa checked her own phone.
"My consulting payments..."
She looked up in panic.
"They've all been reversed."
