Chapter 3 — Evidence Never Raises Its Voice
Inside the house...
Ernesto quietly addressed the guests.
"I owe everyone an apology."
Several people looked confused.
"I invited you here knowing an investigation would take place."
Murmurs spread across the room.
"I needed witnesses."
He turned toward Julián.
"For nearly a year..."
"My daughter refused to file charges."
"Not because she wasn't abused."
"Because she was afraid no one would believe her."
He paused.
"So I waited."
"I knew eventually..."
"The man who believed he was untouchable would expose himself."
He looked directly at Julián.
"And today..."
"You admitted to assaulting her."
"In front of thirteen witnesses."
The detective nodded.
"And the statement was captured by two independent video recordings from guests."
Julián's face drained of color.
The forensic examiner carefully examined the property documents.
"These signatures don't match."
Another investigator held up a credit card statement.
"Mrs. Valeria Salgado-Herrera never authorized these purchases."
The diamond necklace around Ofelia's neck.
Luxury vacations.
Private club memberships.
Designer handbags.
All paid for using accounts opened in Valeria's name.
The evidence kept growing.
The lies kept shrinking.
When the detective stepped forward with handcuffs...
Julián finally understood.
"This is because of one slap?"
Ernesto shook his head.
"No."
"The slap simply proved everything else."

The handcuffs clicked shut.
A sound far louder than the birthday music had ever been.
