CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2

The Five Brothers Return

The Vaughn family had spent six years believing they knew me.

They believed I was Heather Walton.

The quiet wife.

The obedient woman.

The woman who gave up everything for love.

They believed they had taken away my power when they convinced me to leave my family behind.

But they never understood something important.

Power was never something my family gave me.

It was something I was born with.

And that night, when my five brothers returned...

the Vaughn family finally discovered the mistake they had made.

They did not destroy Heather Walton.

They awakened her.

The basement door opened slowly.

Russell turned first.

At that moment, he still believed he was in control.

I saw it in his eyes.

That confidence.

That arrogance.

The same expression he had worn when he slapped me in front of our daughter's birthday cake.

The same expression he had worn when he believed another woman's tears mattered more than my truth.

But then he saw who was standing behind the door.

And for the first time that night...

Russell Vaughn looked afraid.

Grant Walton stepped into the basement.

My oldest brother.

The man who had spent six years trying to find out why his little sister disappeared.

He wore a black suit.

No tie.

No expression.

The kind of calm that was more frightening than anger.

Behind him stood the rest of my brothers.

Five men who had built their own empires.

Five men who had protected me since childhood.

Five men I abandoned because I believed love meant leaving everything behind.

I had been wrong.

"Move away from my sister."

Grant's voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Russell looked at the bodyguards.

Then back at Grant.

"Who are you?"

I almost laughed.

Because that question proved everything.

Six years.

Six years of marriage.

And Russell had never bothered to know the family I came from.

Grant looked at him.

"My name is Grant Walton."

The color disappeared from Russell's face.

Because everyone knew that name.

Everyone except him.

The Walton family was not just wealthy.

We were one of the oldest business families in Atlanta.

Our company controlled investments across technology, real estate, healthcare, and international finance.

But money was never what made people fear us.

It was influence.

The ability to open doors.

Or close them.

Grant was not simply my brother.

He was the man who had turned Walton Holdings into a global empire before the age of thirty-five.

And now he was standing in Russell Vaughn's basement.

Because someone had hurt his sister.

Gwendolyn recovered faster than Russell.

She always did.

She stepped forward with tears in her eyes.

"Oh my God..."

She looked at me.

"Heather, you never told us."

I stared at her.

There it was.

The performance.

Even now.

Even after everything.

She was trying to make herself look innocent.

"I didn't know you had such powerful connections."

Her voice was soft.

Almost admiring.

But I knew what she really meant.

She didn't know she was attacking a Walton.

She thought she was attacking a nobody.

And that was the truth that made me angrier than anything.

Grant looked at Gwendolyn.

"Who are you?"

She straightened.

"I'm Gwendolyn Fairchild."

Grant's expression did not change.

"Should I know that name?"

The humiliation on her face lasted only a second.

But I saw it.

Gwendolyn Fairchild was used to being recognized.

Admired.

Wanted.

She was not used to being invisible.

"I am a close friend of the Vaughn family."

Grant looked at Russell.

"Is that what you call her?"

The silence answered for him.

Russell stepped forward.

"This is my house."

Grant finally looked at him.

"No."

His voice was cold.

"This was your house."

A pause.

"Tonight, it became the place where you made the biggest mistake of your life."

Russell's jaw tightened.

"You broke into my property."

Grant smiled slightly.

"Your property?"

He looked around.

"Interesting."

Then he handed a folder to one of his assistants.

"Because according to the records I have..."

He paused.

"...your largest investor is Walton Capital."

Russell froze.

That was the first crack.

The first moment he realized this was not a family argument.

This was business.

And business was where the Waltons were most dangerous.

I looked at my brothers.

And for the first time in years...

I felt ashamed.

Not because they came.

Because I had stayed away.

I had convinced myself that choosing Russell meant becoming independent.

But standing there, with Phoebe trembling in my arms, I understood something.

Family was not a chain.

It was a shelter.

Grant walked toward me.

His expression softened.

Only for me.

"Heather."

My eyes filled with tears.

"I am sorry."

He shook his head.

"No."

His voice cracked slightly.

"You don't apologize."

He looked at Phoebe.

Then at the blood on my dress.

"You survived."

A pause.

"That is all I needed you to do."

The second oldest brother, Ethan, stepped forward.

Unlike Grant, Ethan's anger was not quiet.

It was controlled.

But barely.

He was one of the most respected attorneys in the country.

The kind of lawyer corporations hired when they were desperate.

He looked at Russell.

"Did you hit my sister?"

Russell didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Ethan saw the bruise.

The injuries.

The fear in Phoebe's eyes.

His expression changed.

"Answer me."

Russell looked away.

That was enough.

Lucas, my third brother, entered the room.

The one who had spent years in military intelligence.

The one who could read people better than anyone.

He walked toward Phoebe and lowered himself to her level.

"Hey."

Phoebe looked at him carefully.

"I'm Uncle Lucas."

Her lips trembled.

"Mommy was hurt."

Lucas closed his eyes for a second.

Because hearing that from a five-year-old child was worse than any evidence.

"Not anymore."

He looked at me.

"We're here now."

Adrian and Nathan stood behind them.

Adrian handled Walton investments.

Nathan controlled the technology division.

They were different.

But they shared one thing.

They loved their sister.

And they were furious.

Russell finally spoke.

"You are overreacting."

The room went silent.

I couldn't believe what I heard.

Even now.

Even after everything.

He still thought he was the victim.

"My wife lied about her identity."

Grant looked at me.

Then at Russell.

"She changed her identity because she wanted a normal life."

Russell laughed.

"A normal life?"

He pointed at me.

"She manipulated me."

That sentence changed something.

Not in my brothers.

In me.

Because I finally understood.

Russell wasn't sorry.

He wasn't ashamed.

He was angry that I was not the person he thought I was.

I stepped forward.

"Russell."

Everyone looked at me.

"I never lied about loving you."

His expression shifted.

"But I did lie about one thing."

A pause.

"I lied to myself."

Silence.

"I convinced myself that if I became smaller..."

My voice shook.

"...you would finally appreciate me."

I looked at Gwendolyn.

"I was wrong."

Then back at Russell.

"You didn't want a wife."

A pause.

"You wanted someone you could control."

For the first time...

Russell had no answer.

The next morning, the entire city knew.

The news broke before sunrise.

HEATHER WALTON VAUGHN REVEALED AS WALTON HEIRESS

The headlines spread everywhere.

People who once called me lucky to marry Russell now called me powerful.

But I didn't care.

Because this wasn't about reputation.

It was about my daughter.

At the hospital, doctors treated Phoebe's injury.

Thankfully, it was not life-threatening.

But the emotional damage was harder.

When the doctor asked what happened, Phoebe looked at me.

Then whispered:

"Daddy got angry."

Those words broke something inside me.

Grant stood outside the room.

"You should have called us years ago."

I looked down.

"I thought I chose my own life."

He sighed.

"No, Heather."

He looked through the glass at Phoebe.

"You sacrificed your life."

The words hurt because they were true.

That evening, Russell came to the hospital.

Not with Gwendolyn.

Not with anger.

Alone.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

"Heather."

I didn't turn.

"What do you want?"

He swallowed.

"I didn't know."

A pause.

"I didn't know who you were."

I looked at him.

"That's the problem."

My voice was quiet.

"You never tried to know."

Russell stepped closer.

"I love Phoebe."

"Then act like it."

The words stopped him.

"Because loving a child means protecting them."

I looked at his hand.

The same hand that held the belt.

"The same hand that hurts them cannot claim to love them."

He left without another word.

But I knew something.

Russell Vaughn was beginning to understand.

The woman he thought he controlled was gone.

That night, Grant placed a document in front of me.

"What is this?"

"Everything we found."

I opened it.

Financial records.

Messages.

Hidden accounts.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Gwendolyn Fairchild.

Grant looked at me.

"She has been planning this for a long time."

My stomach tightened.

"How long?"

He answered quietly.

"Since before you married Russell."

I looked at the evidence.

And finally understood.

The torn dress.

The accusations.

The lies.

None of it was spontaneous.

It was a plan.

A plan to destroy me.

Grant closed the folder.

"Heather."

I looked up.

"This isn't over."

I nodded.

Because deep inside...

I already knew.

The woman who attacked me had started the war.

May you like

But she had no idea who she had declared war against.
