Nathaniel Bennett walked slowly toward Emma.
He gently took the empty inhaler from her trembling hand.
"When did you find this?"
"Just now."
She pointed at Adrian's cashmere coat.
"It was in his inside pocket."
Nathaniel examined the canister without saying a word.
Then he looked at Adrian.
"Explain."
Adrian swallowed hard.
"I... I don't know how it got there."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I must have picked it up by accident."
Emma stared at him.
"The nurses searched Lily's backpack, the ambulance, and the emergency room."
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"All that time... you had it."
Adrian's face turned pale.
"I didn't know it was empty."
Those six words echoed through the hallway.
Nathaniel's expression became colder.
"You didn't know it was empty?"
He stepped closer.
