CHAPTER 2: The Boardroom Reckoning

CHAPTER 2: The Boardroom Reckoning

The silence inside the mansion lasted only a few seconds.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

His hands trembled as he answered.

"Daniel speaking."

No one could hear the voice on the other end.

But everyone watched the color drain from his face.

"What?"

His voice cracked.

"No... there has to be some mistake."

Another pause.

"I've led this company for four years."

Silence.

Then came the words that shattered what remained of his confidence.

"I understand."

He lowered the phone.

Very slowly.

"They voted."

Patricia stood.

"Voted for what?"

Daniel looked at me.

"I've been removed as CEO."

The room seemed to shrink around us.

My chief legal officer stepped inside carrying a leather portfolio.

"Ms. Ward."

"The emergency board meeting has concluded."

He handed me a folder.

"The resolution passed unanimously."

I opened it without emotion.

Every page bore the signatures of directors who had quietly supported me for years.

One by one.

Not because I owned the company.

Because they knew who had truly been running it.

Daniel stared at the documents.

"You planned this."

I shook my head.

"No."

"I prepared for the day you forced me to choose."

"You made the choice yourself."

Chloe slowly stepped away from him.

"You never told me she owned the company."

Daniel couldn't answer.

Because he hadn't known.

Not once during our marriage had he bothered to ask why every international investor insisted on meeting with me before approving a deal.

He had mistaken influence for coincidence.

Respect for politeness.

May you like

Power for loyalty.

He never imagined the company answered to the woman he underestimated.
