CHAPTER 4 MARCUS HALE’S FIRST LOSS

CHAPTER 4

MARCUS HALE’S FIRST LOSS

Marcus Hale had always believed losing was something that happened to other people.

Other businessmen.

Other companies.

Other men who lacked discipline, intelligence, and vision.

Not him.

Failure was never supposed to be part of his story.

Because Marcus did not see himself as someone who became successful.

He saw himself as someone who deserved success.

That difference was what made him dangerous.

And that difference was about to destroy him.

The morning after discovering the hidden ownership agreements, Marcus arrived at Hale Luxury headquarters before sunrise.

The building was almost empty.

Usually, he enjoyed these quiet moments.

They reminded him of his journey.

From a small office.

To a global empire.

From an unknown entrepreneur.

To a billionaire.

He would stand near the windows, looking at the city, telling himself:

I built this.

But today, the words felt different.

Because now another voice answered in his mind.

No.

You managed this.

Someone else built the foundation.

Someone else protected the empire.

Someone else believed in you when nobody else did.

And you repaid her by throwing her away.

Marcus hated those thoughts.

Because they belonged to someone he did not recognize.

A man capable of regret.

At 7:30 AM, his assistant entered his office.

"Mr. Hale."

Marcus did not turn around.

"What?"

"There are some urgent matters."

"Put them on my desk."

She hesitated.

"Sir..."

"What?"

"They are not normal matters."

Marcus finally looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

She placed several documents down.

"The board has temporarily suspended your approval authority on major transactions."

Marcus stared.

"What?"

"Effective immediately."

He picked up the papers.

"Who authorized this?"

The assistant swallowed.

"The ownership board."

His jaw tightened.

"I am the CEO."

"Yes, sir."

"Then they cannot do this."

The assistant said nothing.

Because she knew something Marcus did not want to admit.

They could.

Marcus immediately called the board chairman.

No answer.

He called again.

Still no answer.

That had never happened before.

People answered Marcus Hale.

Always.

Investors.

Executives.

Partners.

Everyone.

Because power had always opened doors for him.

But today...

The doors were beginning to close.

At 9 AM, Marcus entered the emergency board meeting.

He expected resistance.

He expected arguments.

He expected to prove everyone wrong.

Instead, he found something worse.

Calm.

Everyone in the room looked calm.

That frightened him.

Anger was easier to fight.

Calm meant people had already made their decisions.

Marcus sat down.

"Let's stop wasting time."

Nobody responded.

He looked at Evelyn Laurent.

The woman representing the Laurent family.

"You are interfering with my company."

Evelyn looked at him.

"Your company?"

A small silence followed.

Marcus noticed several people looking away.

Embarrassment.

Discomfort.

Judgment.

All emotions he was used to creating in others.

Not feeling himself.

"The company carries my name."

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes."

"And I built it."

She opened a document.

"Mr. Hale, the brand was built under your leadership."

She turned a page.

"But the properties, assets, and financial foundations were never transferred completely to your ownership."

Marcus leaned forward.

"You are twisting legal language."

"No."

Evelyn closed the file.

"We are explaining reality."

Reality.

That word irritated him.

Because reality had changed overnight.

Yesterday, he was the king.

Today, people were explaining his own empire to him.

"This is a temporary situation."

Marcus stood.

"You cannot remove me."

Evelyn looked at him.

"We are not removing you."

A pause.

"Not yet."

The room became silent.

Marcus froze.

Not yet.

Those two words carried more weight than an accusation.

After the meeting, Marcus returned to his office furious.

He threw the documents onto his desk.

"This is ridiculous."

He picked up the phone.

He called his banking contacts.

The first bank executive answered.

"Mr. Hale."

"I need immediate access to the expansion funds."

A pause.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Hale."

The sentence immediately changed the atmosphere.

"What did you say?"

"Your account requires additional authorization now."

Marcus stood.

"Additional authorization from who?"

Another pause.

"The ownership representatives."

His hand tightened around the phone.

"Laurent."

"I'm afraid so."

The call ended.

Marcus called another bank.

Then another.

The result was the same.

Restricted.

Delayed.

Under review.

For years, Marcus believed money followed him.

Now he discovered something painful.

Money followed ownership.

And ownership did not belong to him.

Meanwhile, Isabella returned to the Laurent estate.

For the first time in years, she allowed herself to rest.

But peace did not come easily.

Because revenge was complicated.

People imagined revenge felt satisfying.

They imagined watching someone fall would remove the pain.

But Isabella discovered something else.

Watching Marcus lose everything did not make her happy.

It only reminded her of the man he used to be.

The man who held her hand.

The man who promised forever.

The man who disappeared.

Her father found her sitting alone in the garden.

"You feel sorry for him."

It was not a question.

Isabella looked away.

"I don't know what I feel."

Alexandre sat beside her.

"That is because you loved him."

She was silent.

"But remember something."

"What?"

"Mercy and weakness are not the same thing."

Isabella looked at him.

"I don't want to become someone cruel."

Her father nodded.

"Good."

A pause.

"But don't confuse kindness with allowing someone to hurt you again."

That afternoon, Marcus made the mistake of visiting Aurelia Grand Hotel.

The place where everything started.

He walked through the lobby expecting employees to greet him.

Instead, conversations stopped.

People looked uncomfortable.

A receptionist approached.

"Mr. Hale."

"Prepare the presidential suite."

The receptionist hesitated.

Marcus noticed.

"What?"

"I'm sorry, sir."

"Sorry for what?"

"The suite has been reserved under new instructions."

His eyes narrowed.

"What instructions?"

The receptionist looked down.

"Only approved ownership representatives may access certain executive areas."

Marcus stared.

"Are you saying I cannot enter my own suite?"

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

The humiliation was worse than anger.

Because this time, people witnessed it.

The same way people witnessed Isabella.

The same way guests watched her leave.

Now Marcus stood in the same lobby.

Feeling the same thing.

Powerlessness.

Then his phone rang.

Victoria.

He almost ignored it.

But he answered.

"Where are you?"

Her voice sounded nervous.

"I heard rumors."

"What rumors?"

"People are saying the company is changing."

Marcus looked around.

"Nothing is happening."

But his voice lacked confidence.

Victoria noticed.

"Marcus..."

"What?"

"Are we still safe?"

The question irritated him.

Because she did not ask if he was okay.

She asked if she was safe.

And suddenly, for the first time, Marcus saw Victoria clearly.

She loved his power.

Not him.

That evening, Marcus returned home alone.

The mansion felt empty.

Too empty.

He poured himself a drink.

Then he saw something on the table.

A photograph.

A picture from years ago.

He and Isabella.

Before success.

Before money.

Before pride.

They were laughing.

Happy.

Marcus picked it up.

For a moment, he remembered.

She was there when nobody believed him.

She was there when he had nothing.

She was there before the world knew his name.

And he...

He had thrown her away.

But regret came too late.

Because while Marcus was remembering the past...

The future was already moving without him.

At 11 PM, another official notice arrived.

This one was different.

Short.

Clear.

Final.

Management authority over Aurelia Grand Hotel has been transferred.

Marcus read the document twice.

Then a third time.

Because one sentence destroyed him.

The property he had called "his hotel."

The property where he humiliated Isabella.

The property where he ordered security to remove his wife.

Was no longer under his control.

The irony was almost impossible to accept.

The same place where Marcus tried to prove Isabella had no power...

Was the first place he lost his own.

He stood in the darkness of his office.

Looking at the city.

And for the first time in eleven years...

Marcus Hale whispered a word he hated.

"How?"

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Confused.

Because he finally understood something.

The woman he underestimated had never been powerless.

May you like

She had simply chosen not to use her power.
