Chapter 7 – The CEO Locked Out

Chapter 7 – The CEO Locked Out

The last brass letter came loose with a soft metallic click.

The maintenance technician placed it carefully into a velvet-lined box.

For nine years, the polished plaque outside the executive office had read:

JULIAN CROSS
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Now only four empty screw holes remained in the walnut wall.

Julian stared at them.

It was such a small thing.

Four holes.

Yet they felt larger than the ocean outside.

Because they represented the first public sign that his authority had vanished.

Employees passing through the lobby slowed their steps.

Some pretended to check their phones.

Others quietly disappeared into nearby hallways.

No one wanted to witness the fall of a man who, until that morning, had seemed untouchable.

"This Is My Building."

Julian laughed.

It was forced.

"This is ridiculous."

He looked at the security officers.

"Step aside."

Neither moved.

"I said step aside."

The older officer spoke respectfully.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Cross."

"You no longer have authorization to enter the executive level."

Julian stepped closer.

"I signed your employment contract."

"No, sir."

The answer came calmly.

"You approved my management assignment."

"My employment contract was issued by Ashford Capital."

Julian blinked.

"You've worked here for six years."

"Yes."

"And you've never told me that?"

The officer hesitated.

"You never asked."

Silence settled over the lobby.

Julian suddenly realized how many things he had assumed during the past nine years.

He assumed the staff belonged to him.

He assumed the buildings belonged to him.

He assumed loyalty automatically followed his title.

Now every assumption was collapsing.

The Empty Office

Ignoring the guards, Julian strode toward the private elevator.

He pulled a spare access card from his wallet.

One he kept for emergencies.

He swiped it.

ACCESS DENIED

Another card.

Denied.

A third.

Denied.

He pulled out a master override key.

The elevator emitted a red light.

SECURITY ALERT ACTIVATED

Within seconds, two additional guards entered the lobby.

Not aggressively.

Professionally.

One spoke into a radio.

"Executive lockdown confirmed."

Julian clenched his jaw.

"This is absurd."

"I am the CEO."

The younger guard answered politely.

"Our records indicate otherwise."

The Successor

The elevator doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Victoria stepped into the lobby.

She wore a tailored navy suit with a white blouse.

No expensive jewelry.

Only the emerald pendant resting quietly against her collarbone.

She hadn't dressed to impress.

She had dressed to work.

Conversations stopped instantly.

Housekeepers paused with carts.

Receptionists stood.

Bell staff straightened.

One by one...

Employees who had worked beside Victoria for years nodded respectfully.

"Good morning, Ms. Ashford."

"Welcome back."

"It's good to see you again."

No one had instructed them to do that.

They simply remembered.

Julian watched in disbelief.

Not one person greeted him.

Every eye followed Victoria instead.

She acknowledged each employee by name.

"Good morning, Daniel."

"How's your daughter's recovery?"

The maintenance supervisor smiled in surprise.

"She's much better."

"I'm glad."

She continued walking.

"Maria."

The elderly housekeeper smiled warmly.

"Welcome home."

Victoria squeezed her hand gently.

"Thank you."

Julian finally understood something that had escaped him for years.

People obeyed him.

They cared about her.

There was a difference.

Their First Conversation

Victoria stopped several feet away.

Neither of them spoke immediately.

The lobby seemed to hold its breath.

Finally, Julian broke the silence.

"You planned this."

Victoria looked at him quietly.

"No."

"My family prepared for it."

"You triggered it."

His voice rose.

"You hid everything from me."

"I protected my family."

"You lied."

She met his eyes.

"I never once told you the resort belonged to you."

He opened his mouth.

Closed it again.

She was right.

She had never claimed he owned anything.

He had simply assumed.

"Why?"

Julian whispered.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Victoria's answer came without hesitation.

"Because I wanted you to love me."

Not my surname.

Not my inheritance.

Not my family's empire.

Me.

Julian looked away.

For a moment, memories flooded back.

The tiny apartment they had shared before Azure Cove opened.

Victoria staying awake until three in the morning correcting architectural drawings.

Bringing coffee to exhausted construction workers.

Celebrating every successful inspection like it was Christmas morning.

She had never acted like an heiress.

Because she never wanted to be treated as one.

The Employees Choose

The silence broke when Marcus, the resort's operations director, approached.

He carried a thick folder.

He stopped before Victoria.

"These require your signature."

Julian frowned.

"Marcus."

Marcus turned politely.

"Yes, Mr. Cross?"

"I asked you to finalize the expansion contracts yesterday."

"I'm afraid those orders have been suspended."

"By who?"

Marcus glanced toward Victoria.

"By the owner."

Julian laughed bitterly.

"So everyone knew except me?"

Marcus answered honestly.

"No."

"We found out this morning."

"But once we learned the truth..."

He looked at Victoria.

"...many things suddenly made sense."

"What things?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Whenever there was a crisis..."

"We always called her."

Julian said nothing.

Marcus continued.

"The investors believed in you."

"The employees believed in her."

The Penthouse

Upstairs, Sabrina continued searching through Victoria's study.

She couldn't stop thinking about the letter Eleanor Ashford had written.

The man who believes he owns what he merely borrowed.

Her phone buzzed again.

Breaking news alerts multiplied across the screen.

Ashford Capital Removes CEO Pending Investigation.

Emergency Leadership Changes Confirmed.

Financial Audit Underway.

She called Julian.

Voicemail.

Again.

Nothing.

Fear replaced confidence.

She hurried into the bedroom and began packing jewelry into a designer suitcase.

If something was wrong...

She intended to leave before anyone stopped her.

She reached for the emerald pendant.

For the first time, she considered taking it off.

Before she could unclasp it, the penthouse doorbell rang.

Three slow chimes.

She froze.

Another knock.

Firm.

Professional.

Not Julian.

An Unexpected Visitor

She opened the door just enough to look outside.

David Morrison stood in the hallway.

Beside him were two women in gray business suits.

Behind them waited two uniformed security officers.

"Ms. Cole."

David smiled politely.

She forced a smile.

"Can I help you?"

"I'm here regarding trust property."

"I don't understand."

"I believe you do."

He glanced toward the emerald pendant.

"That necklace belongs to the Ashford Family Heritage Trust."

Sabrina instinctively touched it.

"Julian gave it to me."

David nodded.

"I'm sure he did."

"Unfortunately..."

"He lacked the legal authority."

One of the women stepped forward.

"I'm an inventory officer."

"We'll need to recover all trust assets currently inside the penthouse."

Sabrina's face turned pale.

"You can't just come in."

David calmly produced a court order.

"Actually..."

"We can."

The Lock Changes

Downstairs, Julian watched helplessly as a locksmith replaced the electronic lock outside his former office.

Every click echoed through the hallway.

Final.

Permanent.

He wanted to shout.

To demand answers.

To threaten lawsuits.

Instead...

He simply watched.

Victoria walked past him toward the executive suite.

She paused at the doorway.

Without looking back, she spoke softly.

"I never wanted this."

Julian answered bitterly.

"Could have fooled me."

She turned at last.

Tears shimmered in her eyes, but her voice remained steady.

"I wanted a husband."

"I never wanted to replace one."

Then she disappeared into the office they had once shared.

The door closed quietly behind her.

Not slammed.

Not dramatic.

Simply closed.

Julian remained standing alone in the hallway.

For the first time in his adult life...

He had nowhere to go.

At that exact moment, his phone vibrated.

The caller ID displayed an unfamiliar number.

He answered immediately.

"This is Julian."

A calm male voice responded.

"Mr. Cross."

"My name is Special Agent Daniel Reeves."

"I'm calling on behalf of the Financial Crimes Division."

"We'd like to ask you a few questions regarding allegations of fraud, embezzlement..."

The agent paused.

"...and conspiracy."

Julian felt the hallway tilt beneath him.

The loss of his title had only been the beginning.

Now...

May you like

The law was coming.
