Chapter 5: The Mistress Who Played the Wrong Game

Chapter 5: The Mistress Who Played the Wrong Game

Celeste Monroe always believed she understood powerful men.

She studied them.

She observed their weaknesses.

She learned what they wanted to hear.

And most importantly...

She learned what they feared losing.

For years, she had built her life around one belief:

Power belonged to the person who controlled the story.

And Celeste was very good at controlling stories.

She convinced Nathan Ashford that she believed in him.

She convinced executives that she was indispensable.

She convinced the world that Evelyn Monroe was an obstacle standing between her and the life she deserved.

But there was one thing Celeste never considered.

What happens when the person you are trying to destroy is better at the game than you?

The Woman Who Thought She Won

After Nathan lost his position as CEO, Celeste disappeared from public view.

For three days, she stayed inside her penthouse apartment.

The same apartment Nathan had bought for her.

The same place where she imagined herself becoming the next Mrs. Ashford.

She looked around the luxury furniture.

The designer clothes.

The expensive artwork.

Everything represented victory.

Or at least...

It used to.

Now it felt like evidence.

Evidence of a life built on someone else's collapse.

Her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

"Hello?"

A man's voice responded.

"You should leave the country."

Celeste frowned.

"Who is this?"

"You don't understand what you've become involved in."

The call ended.

For the first time in years...

Celeste felt afraid.

The Secret Nathan Never Knew

Celeste had always presented herself as a woman who came from nothing.

A self-made executive.

A brilliant consultant.

A woman who earned every opportunity.

That was partly true.

But not completely.

Because Celeste had a secret.

Before she met Nathan, she had worked for a private investment group.

Not Monroe International.

A competitor.

A company that had spent years trying to weaken Adrian Monroe's empire.

And Nathan Ashford had not been chosen randomly.

He was selected.

At first, Celeste thought Nathan was perfect.

Ambitious.

Proud.

Easily influenced.

A man who wanted recognition more than anything.

Exactly the kind of person powerful enemies could use.

But something unexpected happened.

Nathan became more successful than planned.

And Celeste became emotionally attached to the power surrounding him.

She stopped seeing him as a tool.

She started seeing him as her future.

That was her mistake.

The Meeting in the Dark

Two nights later, Celeste met the person who had contacted her.

A private lounge.

No cameras.

No witnesses.

The man sitting across from her was older.

Calm.

Dangerous.

"Damian Cross."

Celeste recognized the name.

A businessman known for destroying competitors without ever appearing in public.

"You work for him."

She said.

Damian smiled.

"Worked."

Celeste became cautious.

"What does that mean?"

"It means I learned something."

"What?"

He leaned forward.

"Adrian Monroe is not the most dangerous person in this situation."

Celeste frowned.

"Then who is?"

He smiled.

"Evelyn."

The Woman Celeste Misjudged

Celeste had always underestimated Evelyn.

That was why she lost.

She thought Evelyn was soft.

Too kind.

Too patient.

She thought kindness meant weakness.

But she had misunderstood.

Evelyn's kindness was not inability to fight.

It was the choice not to destroy people immediately.

And when that choice disappeared...

She became terrifying.

Nathan’s Last Hope

Nathan contacted Celeste three days later.

His voice sounded different.

Not arrogant.

Not confident.

Desperate.

"We need to talk."

Celeste almost laughed.

The man who once controlled entire companies now sounded like someone asking for permission.

"Why?"

"Because we can fix this."

Celeste remained silent.

"Can we?"

Nathan hesitated.

That hesitation told her everything.

He didn't have a plan.

He had hope.

And hope was useless without power.

The Betrayal Nathan Never Expected

Celeste met him at a private restaurant.

Nathan arrived first.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

For a moment, Celeste remembered the man she first met.

The ambitious CEO who promised her the world.

Then she remembered the reality.

A man who could destroy someone he claimed to love.

"Did you ever love me?"

Nathan suddenly asked.

Celeste looked at him.

The question surprised her.

Because she expected anger.

Not sadness.

"I loved what we could become."

Nathan looked down.

"But not me."

She did not answer.

Because silence was an answer.

The Hidden Evidence

Nathan reached into his coat.

Celeste immediately became alert.

But he placed a small device on the table.

A recording.

"I know about your connection."

Celeste froze.

"What?"

Nathan looked at her.

"The private group."

"The people who approached you before you joined Ashford Global."

Her expression changed.

"You investigated me?"

"No."

Nathan smiled bitterly.

"Evelyn did."

The fear returned.

Because Celeste finally understood.

Evelyn had known.

All along.

The Game Was Over

That night, Celeste returned home and destroyed nothing.

No panic.

No screaming.

No escape plan.

She simply sat in silence.

Because for the first time...

She understood the truth.

She had not entered a game between two powerful people.

She had entered a war.

And she was never the player.

She was a piece.

A useful piece.

Until she was no longer useful.

The Woman Behind the Curtain

Meanwhile, Evelyn stood in her father's office reviewing the latest information.

Adrian looked at her.

"Celeste is more dangerous than Nathan."

Evelyn nodded.

"I know."

"She is also more afraid."

Adrian studied his daughter.

"You still feel sorry for her."

Evelyn closed the file.

"No."

A pause.

"But I understand her."

"That is why she is dangerous."

Outside the window, the city lights continued shining.

The first battle was over.

Nathan had fallen.

But the real enemy had finally revealed itself.

And Celeste Monroe...

The woman who thought she could control every man around her...

Had finally discovered the one person she could never manipulate.

May you like

Evelyn Monroe.
