CHAPTER 4

THE SISTER WHO WANTED EVERYTHING

The message remained on the security screen for exactly seven seconds.

Seven seconds was all it took for Maren Whitaker to understand one thing.

Someone was still inside her life.

Not the past.

Not a memory.

Not a ghost.

A living person.

Someone who knew where she was.

Someone who knew she survived.

Someone who was angry enough to tell her she should have stayed dead.

Then the screen went black.

The lights returned.

And Vivian was already moving.

"Everyone out."

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

The security team stationed outside immediately entered the house.

Maren watched her mother transform.

The woman who had sat beside her hospital bed crying over lost years disappeared.

In her place was someone else.

Someone who had survived enemies.

Someone who had spent fifteen years preparing for war.

"Check every entrance."

Vivian ordered.

"Disable all external connections."

Maren stared at her.

"You knew this could happen."

Vivian stopped.

Slowly, she turned.

"I knew it was possible."

"No."

Maren's voice hardened.

"You knew."

A painful silence filled the room.

Because once again, Maren found herself standing in front of another secret.

Another piece of her life that everyone else seemed to understand except her.

"Mom."

Vivian looked exhausted.

"I was hoping you would have more time before this happened."

Maren laughed quietly.

"More time?"

She pointed toward the dead screen.

"I almost died three days ago."

"I know."

"My husband tried to kill me."

"I know."

"My sister helped him."

Vivian lowered her eyes.

"And now someone else is threatening me."

Maren stepped closer.

"So tell me."

Her voice shook.

"What else don't I know?"

Vivian did not answer immediately.

And that hesitation hurt more than anything.

Because Maren had spent fifteen years believing secrets belonged to the past.

Now she understood.

Secrets had been following her.

Waiting.

"The truth about Celeste..."

Vivian finally said.

Maren froze.

"What about her?"

Vivian walked toward the study.

"There are things about your sister you never knew."

Celeste Whitaker had always been Maren's shadow.

That was how everyone described it.

Maren was the brilliant daughter.

The future CEO.

The one who understood numbers before she understood toys.

Celeste was the beautiful one.

The charming one.

The one who could walk into a room and make everyone smile.

Growing up, people compared them constantly.

"Why can't you be more like Maren?"

Maren remembered hearing adults say it.

She remembered Celeste hearing it too.

At first, Maren felt guilty.

She tried to fix it.

She helped Celeste with homework.

She defended her when relatives criticized her.

She covered for her mistakes.

When Celeste failed her first business course, Maren paid for tutoring.

When Celeste got into financial trouble after a failed boutique, Maren quietly settled the debt.

When Celeste cried that everyone only saw her as "Maren's little sister," Maren hugged her.

"You are not my shadow."

Maren had told her.

"You are my family."

Now those memories felt different.

Not false.

But incomplete.

Vivian opened a locked drawer in the study.

Inside was a file.

A thick file.

Maren immediately recognized the handwriting.

Her father's.

"Your father investigated Celeste."

Maren stared.

"No."

"He didn't hate her."

Vivian quickly added.

"He loved her."

"Then why?"

"Because he noticed things."

Vivian placed photographs on the desk.

Bank transfers.

Messages.

Contracts.

Maren picked up the first page.

Her eyes moved across the numbers.

Then stopped.

"What is this?"

"Money Celeste received."

Maren frowned.

"From who?"

Vivian answered quietly.

"Richard Vale."

The name again.

The same man connected to her father's death.

"No."

Maren shook her head.

"Celeste was sixteen."

"Yes."

"She couldn't have been involved."

"Not knowingly."

Vivian paused.

"But she was used."

Maren looked through the documents.

For years, Celeste had claimed she was simply unlucky.

Bad relationships.

Bad investments.

Bad decisions.

But someone had always been there to rescue her.

Someone had always been there to provide money.

"Why didn't Dad tell me?"

Vivian looked at her.

"Because he knew how much you loved her."

That answer hurt.

Because it was true.

Maren would have protected Celeste.

Even if Celeste was guilty.

Meanwhile, across the city...

Celeste Whitaker sat alone in an interrogation room.

The woman who once entered charity events wearing designer dresses now wore borrowed clothes and no makeup.

For the first time in her life...

nobody cared how she looked.

Detective Cole placed a folder in front of her.

"You need to understand something."

Celeste looked up.

"What?"

"Reed is going to blame you."

She laughed bitterly.

"He won't."

"He already did."

The detective opened a document.

A statement prepared by Reed's lawyer.

Celeste's name appeared everywhere.

The mastermind.

The manipulator.

The woman who convinced Reed to act.

Her face changed.

"No."

"Yes."

"He promised me."

Detective Cole leaned back.

"What?"

"That we would leave together."

The detective almost looked sorry.

Almost.

"Celeste."

She looked up.

"Did Reed ever sign anything promising you a future?"

Silence.

Because she knew.

He hadn't.

"He used you."

Those words broke something inside her.

Because they came from the one person she hated most.

The truth.

That night, Maren received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

ASK YOUR SISTER WHY SHE WAS NEVER A WHITAKER.

Maren stared.

Her first reaction was disbelief.

Then anger.

Then confusion.

She walked into the room where Vivian was reviewing documents.

"Mom."

Vivian looked up.

Maren placed the phone down.

"Is this true?"

Vivian read the message.

Her face changed.

And that was enough.

"You knew."

Vivian whispered:

"Maren..."

"You knew."

Her voice cracked.

"Celeste isn't Dad's daughter?"

Silence.

The woman who had survived death.

The woman who had hidden for fifteen years.

The woman who seemed to know every secret.

Finally nodded.

"Yes."

Maren stepped back.

"No."

"She doesn't know."

"How could she not know?"

Vivian looked away.

"Because your father never wanted her to feel unwanted."

Maren closed her eyes.

And suddenly everything became more complicated.

Celeste had betrayed her.

Celeste had helped try to kill her.

But somewhere beneath all that hatred...

there was a scared girl who had spent her entire life believing she was less.

Then Vivian said something that changed everything.

"Your father didn't hide the truth because he wanted to protect Celeste."

Maren looked at her.

"Then why?"

Vivian opened the final document.

A DNA report.

But not Celeste's.

Maren's.

Her hands shook.

"What is this?"

Vivian whispered:

"The reason Richard Vale wanted you gone."

Maren looked at the report.

At the words written across the top.

PATERNITY CONFIRMATION

Her heart stopped.

Because beneath her father's name...

was another name.

A name she had never seen before.

Arthur Whitaker was not Maren's biological father.

Maren stared.

The entire room disappeared.

Her father.

Her mother.

Her family.

Everything she believed.

Gone.

Outside the house, a man watched through binoculars.

He lowered them slowly.

Then smiled.

"Good."

"Now she knows."

The person beside him asked:

"Will she break?"

The man looked toward the Whitaker residence.

"No."

A pause.

May you like

"That's what makes her dangerous."
