Chapter 5: Vanessa's Perfect Dream

Chapter 5: Vanessa's Perfect Dream
The Presidential Suite was unusually quiet.
Vanessa Blake stood barefoot on the private balcony, wrapped in a white silk robe embroidered with the Sterling Crown's golden crest. Below her, the Las Vegas Strip sparkled beneath the late morning sun. Tourists wandered the sidewalks, luxury cars glided past the hotel entrance, and helicopters buzzed across the cloudless sky.
She smiled.
By this time tomorrow, she thought, her life would finally begin.
She imagined magazine interviews, charity galas, designer wardrobes, and beachfront homes. Dominic would receive his promotion, finalize his divorce, and ask her to marry him.
Everything was falling into place.
Or so she believed.
Breakfast Fit for a Queen
A knock sounded at the suite door.
A room service attendant wheeled in a lavish breakfast.
Fresh pastries.
Beluga caviar.
Seasonal fruit.
Imported cheeses.
Handmade chocolates.
A silver pot of coffee.
Vanessa admired the display.
"This is perfect."
The attendant smiled politely.
"We hope you're enjoying your stay, Miss Blake."
"We certainly are."
As he turned to leave, she stopped him.
"Tell your manager the service has been exceptional."
"I'll make sure they know."
After the door closed, she reached for her phone and took several photos.
The breakfast.
The champagne.
The skyline.
The suite.
She uploaded them to her private social media account with the caption:
Some dreams are worth waiting for.
Within minutes, compliments poured in.
"Living your best life!"
"Queen energy!"
"Someone is treating you right!"
Vanessa smiled with satisfaction.
She never mentioned Dominic's name.
Mystery attracted more attention.
The Call That Didn't Come
At ten o'clock, she expected Dominic to text.
Nothing.
Ten-thirty.
Still nothing.
She frowned.
The board meeting shouldn't have taken this long.
At eleven, she finally called him.
Straight to voicemail.
She tried again.
No answer.
A third time.
The phone had been switched off.
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"They must still be negotiating."
She wasn't worried.
Important people attended long meetings.
That was how business worked.
A Surprise Visitor
Just before noon, another knock came at the suite door.
Vanessa smiled.
"Finally."
She expected Dominic.
Instead, Carter stood outside.
His navy uniform was immaculate, his expression calm.
"Good afternoon, Miss Blake."
She looked past him.
"Where's Dominic?"
"I'm afraid Mr. Hale is unavailable."
She frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"He asked me to deliver this."
Carter handed her a cream-colored envelope.
Vanessa eagerly opened it.
Inside was a single card.
Your transportation will arrive at 3:00 p.m. Please be prepared for departure.
She smiled.
"How thoughtful."
"So he's sending a car."
Carter nodded politely.
"Yes, Miss Blake."
She barely noticed the peculiar wording.
Departure.
Not pickup.
Not transfer.
Just...
Departure.
Celebration Plans
Vanessa spent the afternoon shopping online.
She ordered a custom evening gown.
A diamond bracelet.
Designer shoes.
A bridal magazine somehow found its way into her shopping cart.
She laughed at herself.
Too soon?
Maybe.
But she knew Dominic.
He craved admiration.
And she had always known exactly how to give it.
Unlike Evelyn.
Poor, quiet Evelyn.
Vanessa remembered the look on Evelyn's face in the lobby.
The cardigan.
The sneakers.
The silence.
She laughed softly.
"I did her a favor."
Dominic deserved someone who understood success.
Someone glamorous.
Someone ambitious.
Someone who belonged beside powerful men.
Downstairs
While Vanessa dreamed upstairs, the atmosphere in the executive offices had changed completely.
Legal teams moved swiftly through conference rooms.
Human Resources prepared official notices.
Compliance officers secured financial records.
Information technology disabled executive credentials.
At exactly 12:15 p.m., Dominic's corporate email account was suspended.
At 12:17, his building access privileges were revoked.
At 12:20, company credit cards were frozen.
At 12:25, the executive parking permit registered to his vehicle became invalid.
No announcements were made.
No drama unfolded.
The system simply moved forward.
One procedure after another.
A Different Conversation
In another conference room, Evelyn sat with Samuel Alder and Margaret Chen.
Samuel reviewed the latest reports.
"Bank accounts have been secured."
Margaret added,
"Regulators have acknowledged receipt of our disclosure."
Evelyn nodded.
"And Dominic?"
"He requested another opportunity to speak with you."
She remained quiet.
"What did you tell him?"
"That the Board will notify him when appropriate."
Samuel looked at Evelyn carefully.
"You still haven't read his written statement."
A sealed envelope rested beside her.
She glanced at it.
"Not yet."
"You may want to."
She gently pushed it aside.
"I'll read it after today's work is finished."
Business first.
Emotions later.
That had always been her father's rule.
The Dress
Back upstairs, Vanessa stood before the suite's enormous mirror wearing a new red designer dress she had purchased months earlier for what she hoped would become a life-changing celebration.
She admired herself.
"Perfect."
She imagined photographers.
Luxury magazines.
Business wives whispering with envy.
She slipped on diamond earrings.
Applied another layer of lipstick.
Smiled.
Everything looked exactly as she had imagined.
Except...
Dominic still hadn't called.
The News Alert
At 1:42 p.m., her phone vibrated.
She expected Dominic's name.
Instead, a financial news notification appeared.
Whitmore Holdings Announces Immediate Executive Leadership Changes
Vanessa frowned.
She opened the article.
It contained almost no details.
Only a brief statement.
Whitmore Holdings confirms that a senior executive has been placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of an internal ethics review. Company operations remain unaffected.
She laughed.
"Poor executive."
Someone else was having a terrible day.
She never imagined the announcement referred to the man she loved.
Three O'Clock
Exactly at three, the phone rang.
"Miss Blake?"
"Yes?"
"This is hotel management."
"Your transportation has arrived."
She smiled.
"Wonderful."
"Mr. Hale sent it?"
A brief pause followed.
"The arrangements have been made."
She grabbed her handbag.
Perfect.
Dominic must have planned a surprise.
Perhaps lunch.
Perhaps shopping.
Perhaps...
A proposal.
She checked her reflection one last time.
Every hair in place.
Every detail flawless.
She walked confidently toward the elevator.
The Lobby
When the elevator doors opened, Vanessa stepped into the magnificent lobby with her head held high.
She expected to see Dominic waiting beside a luxury car.
Instead...
Two men in dark business suits stood near the reception desk.
One held a leather briefcase.
The other carried a tablet.
Behind them waited a black sedan.
No flowers.
No champagne.
No Dominic.
Vanessa approached with a puzzled smile.
"I'm Vanessa Blake."
The older man nodded.
"Miss Blake."
"My name is David Foster."
"Corporate Legal."
Her smile faded slightly.
"I'm sorry?"
He handed her a folder.
"This contains formal notification that all accommodations, transportation, meals, and expenses previously authorized under Whitmore Holdings have been terminated."
She stared.
"I don't understand."
"You are no longer an approved guest."
Her face lost color.
"There must be some mistake."
"There isn't."
She looked around desperately.
"Where's Dominic?"
"I'm not authorized to discuss personnel matters."
"I demand to see him."
"I'm afraid that won't be possible."
The Same Lobby
Vanessa slowly turned.
Yesterday...
She had stood in this very lobby.
She had laughed.
She had thrown five dollars at another woman.
She had believed power came from standing beside the right man.
Today...
Guests watched in silence.
Employees remained perfectly professional.
No one laughed.
No one mocked her.
No one humiliated her.
The Sterling Crown treated every departing guest with dignity.
Even those who had shown none.
Carter stepped forward.
He handed her a small envelope.
"One final item."
Confused, Vanessa opened it.
Inside...
Folded neatly...
Was the same crisp five-dollar bill.
No note.
No signature.
Nothing else.
Her hands began trembling.
For the first time since entering the Sterling Crown...
She realized something terrifying.
The quiet woman in the cardigan had never been asking for respect.
She had been giving Vanessa every opportunity to show some.
And Vanessa had failed.
As Carter politely opened the front doors, the hot desert wind swept through the lobby.
Vanessa walked toward the waiting sedan, clutching the five-dollar bill as though it had suddenly become heavier than gold.
Behind her, the revolving doors continued turning.
Inside the hotel, business carried on as usual.
Above the entrance, the Sterling Crown's motto shimmered in polished bronze:
"True Luxury Begins with Character."
For the first time, Vanessa understood what those words really meant.
May you like
And she feared it was far too late.
