CHAPTER 2: The Woman at the Head of the Table

CHAPTER 2: The Woman at the Head of the Table
The Presidential Suite overlooked the dazzling lights of the Las Vegas Strip.
Vanessa stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, swirling champagne inside a crystal flute.
"I've never stayed anywhere this expensive," she laughed. "Your company certainly knows how to reward its executives."
Dominic loosened his tie.
"It won't be my company much longer."
She turned.
"What do you mean?"
"The board has been talking about expanding internationally. Once this merger closes, I'll be promoted to Chief Executive Officer."
Vanessa smiled and kissed him.
"So your boring little wife will officially become irrelevant."
Dominic chuckled.
"She already is."
At that exact moment, his phone vibrated.
Emergency Board Meeting. Attendance Mandatory. Executive Boardroom. 9:30 PM.
He frowned.
"Tonight?"
Another notification arrived.
Failure to attend will constitute a violation of Executive Contract Section 14.
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"Ignore it."
"I can't."
He grabbed his jacket.
"Give me thirty minutes."
Meanwhile...
Forty-nine floors below...
The Executive Boardroom had transformed into a fortress.
Corporate attorneys unpacked dozens of black binders.
Digital forensic analysts connected encrypted laptops.
Compliance officers reviewed thousands of financial records.
No one spoke louder than necessary.
Everyone knew something historic was about to happen.
At precisely 9:28 p.m., the double walnut doors opened.
Every board member stood.
Not because someone instructed them to.
Because Evelyn Whitmore had entered.
She was still wearing the same cardigan.
The same sneakers.
The same quiet expression.
Only one thing had changed.
She was now seated beneath the polished brass plaque engraved:
CHAIRWOMAN OF WHITMORE HOLDINGS
She placed the folded five-dollar bill on the conference table.
"Let's begin."
At 9:35 p.m., Dominic entered confidently.
Vanessa followed him despite being told the meeting was restricted.
Both stopped walking.
Twenty-three executives were already seated.
The company's outside legal counsel.
Federal compliance advisers.
Independent auditors.
Even retired Chairman Richard Alder sat silently near the end of the table.
Dominic forced a smile.
"What exactly is—"
His voice died.
At the head of the table...
Evelyn calmly opened a leather portfolio.
She never looked surprised.
She simply looked prepared.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"This is ridiculous."
"Why is she sitting there?"
No one answered.
Instead...
Richard Alder slowly stood.
"Mr. Hale."
"For the record..."
He glanced toward Evelyn.
"...please address the Chair."
Dominic frowned.
"The Chair?"
Alder nodded.
"The majority shareholder."
Dominic looked at Evelyn.
Then laughed.
"Enough jokes."
Evelyn quietly slid a document across the polished table.
Corporate ownership records.
Board resolutions.
Trust certificates.
Every signature had been notarized years earlier.
Dominic flipped through the pages.
His smile disappeared.
"No..."
Another folder.
Property records.
Hotel ownership.
Sterling Crown Hotel.
Owner:
Whitmore Hospitality Group
Controlling Shareholder:
Evelyn Grace Whitmore
Dominic's breathing changed.
Vanessa whispered,
"This can't be real..."
Evelyn finally spoke.
"Would you like me to continue?"
A screen descended from the ceiling.
The first video appeared.
Security footage from the hotel lobby.
Crystal clear.
Vanessa throwing five dollars onto the marble floor.
Dominic saying nothing.
Every guest watched.
Every employee watched.
Every board member watched.
Silence filled the room.
The second video appeared.
Expense reports.
Private jet flights.
Luxury jewelry.
Five-star vacations.
All charged to Whitmore Holdings.
Over six million dollars.
Vanessa slowly backed away.
"I didn't know..."
Legal counsel interrupted.
"The invoices contain your signature."
She froze.
Then Evelyn reached into her cardigan pocket.
She unfolded the same five-dollar bill.
Placed it gently beside Dominic.
"You told me to buy coffee."
Her voice remained calm.
"I've decided to return your generosity."
Nobody smiled.
Nobody breathed.
Because everyone understood.
This wasn't revenge.
May you like
It was judgment.
