CHAPTER 1 — The Call That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 1 — The Call That Changed Everything

The drive home was silent.

Lily clung to my coat, her head buried in my shoulder. Every few seconds, she hiccuped through tears.

“Mommy… it hurts,” she whispered.

“I know, baby,” I said softly. “I know.”

But inside me, something had already gone cold.

Not grief.

Not shock.

Decision.

My phone rang twice before Ethan finally answered again.

“This is not the time, Rachel,” he snapped.

“It is exactly the time,” I replied. “Your secretary shaved our daughter’s head.”

A pause.

Then his voice lowered.

“Vanessa said it was a misunderstanding.”

I almost laughed.

A misunderstanding.

Like what? A child’s hair accidentally falling off?

“She assaulted her,” I said. “At her school.”

“She wouldn’t do that without reason.”

That was the moment I realized something simple and irreversible.

He believed her before he believed his child.

I exhaled slowly.

May you like

“Ethan,” I said quietly. “You have one hour.”

Then I ended the call.
