CHAPTER 4 – THE WOMAN WITH TWO NAMES

CHAPTER 4 – THE WOMAN WITH TWO NAMES
The photograph changed everything.
Not because I was surprised that Margaret knew.
By then, I had learned something about the Reed family.
Secrets did not survive because one person was good at hiding.
They survived because many people decided silence was easier than honesty.
What shocked me was something else.
Margaret had not simply known about Sophie.
She had been involved.
The woman who once held my hands on my wedding day and promised I was family had helped protect a life that existed behind my back.
A life built from lies.
I spent the entire night staring at the photograph.
Margaret standing outside the apartment building.
The same building where Nathan had created a second life.
She wasn't there by accident.
The angle of the picture made that clear.
She wasn't visiting a stranger.
She belonged there.
I zoomed in.
The date appeared at the bottom.
Two years earlier.
Not long after Nathan had started becoming distant.
Not long after I had begun asking why my husband suddenly needed more privacy.
Not long after I started feeling like a guest in my own marriage.
The next morning, I made a decision.
I was done asking Nathan questions.
Every question I asked him became another opportunity for him to control the answer.
Instead, I would find the truth from the people who had spent years protecting it.
And the first person I needed to meet was Sophie Vale.
Finding her was easier than I expected.
That frightened me.
People who live secret lives often believe they are invisible.
But secrets leave traces.
A name on a document.
A payment.
A forgotten email.
A photograph.
A mistake.
Sophie worked as a medical consultant for a private research company downtown.
At least, that was what the official records said.
I waited outside her office for almost an hour before she appeared.
She was different from what I imagined.
I expected someone arrogant.
Someone cold.
Someone who looked like she had stolen something from me.
Instead, Sophie looked exhausted.
Not guilty.
Exhausted.
Like she had been carrying a weight for years.
She noticed me immediately.
Maybe because she knew who I was.
Maybe because she had been expecting me.
"Amelia Hart."
The way she said my name confirmed it.
She knew.
I stopped a few feet away.
"You know who I am."
She nodded.
"Yes."
"How long?"
Her eyes lowered.
"Since before you knew about me."
That answer hurt.
But I wasn't surprised anymore.
"Then you know why I'm here."
She looked around the parking area.
"Not here."
We sat in a quiet café several blocks away.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Two women connected by the same man.
That was the strange part.
Society always wanted women in situations like this to hate each other.
To fight.
To blame each other.
But sitting across from Sophie, I realized something.
She wasn't the person who made vows to me.
She wasn't the person who came home every night and looked me in the eyes.
Nathan was.
"Tell me the truth," I said.
Sophie wrapped both hands around her coffee cup.
"I don't know where to start."
"Start with your name."
She looked confused.
"What?"
"The title said 'The Woman With Two Names.'"
Her expression changed.
So I continued.
"Who are you really?"
For the first time, Sophie looked afraid.
"My name isn't Sophie Vale."
The words landed softly.
But they changed the entire conversation.
"What?"
"My legal name is Sophia Bennett."
I stared at her.
"Bennett?"
She nodded.
"My father was Thomas Bennett."
The name meant nothing to me.
Until I saw the expression on her face.
"Who was he?"
Sophie looked out the window.
"He was one of Nathan's first investors."
The pieces started moving.
Not into place.
Into something much darker.
"You knew Nathan before me."
"Yes."
"How?"
"My father worked with Nathan when he was starting his private practice."
"And you?"
She hesitated.
"I knew him my whole life."
The coffee shop suddenly felt too quiet.
"You were not an affair that started four years ago."
"No."
Her voice became softer.
"I was someone from his past."
"Someone he never told me about."
"Yes."
I wanted to be angry.
I wanted to stand up and leave.
But curiosity was stronger.
"What happened between you?"
Sophie looked down.
"When I was younger, I believed Nathan loved me."
The words were painful.
Not because I felt sorry for her.
Because I recognized them.
"I believed his promises."
She swallowed.
"Then I discovered he was already building another future."
"With me?"
She shook her head.
"No."
She looked directly at me.
"With whoever could help him get what he wanted."
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it changed the story.
Nathan had not chosen Sophie over me.
Maybe he had not chosen either of us.
Maybe he had chosen himself.
"What did he want?"
Sophie hesitated.
"Control."
"Of what?"
"Everything."
She opened her bag and pulled out a small folder.
"I kept these because I knew one day someone would need proof."
My hands tightened.
"Proof of what?"
"That Nathan didn't just have relationships."
"He collected people."
Inside the folder were copies of emails.
Financial records.
Messages.
The first document was enough to make my heart stop.
A transfer agreement.
Nathan's name.
Sophie's father's company.
And another signature.
Margaret Reed.
"Your mother-in-law was involved?"
"Yes."
"How?"
Sophie looked at me.
"Margaret helped Nathan secure money and connections."
"She believed he was building an empire."
"And you?"
"I was the mistake she couldn't erase."
I looked through the documents.
The dates.
The signatures.
The agreements.
Suddenly, the secret apartment made sense.
The hidden accounts.
The careful planning.
This wasn't only about cheating.
It was about power.
"Why are you helping me?"
Sophie was silent for a long time.
Then she answered:
"Because I spent years believing Nathan was the only person who could save me."
She looked down.
"And then I realized he was the person I needed saving from."
For the first time since discovering the truth, I felt something unexpected.
Not relief.
Not forgiveness.
A strange connection.
Two women.
Both lied to.
Both controlled.
Both treated as pieces in someone else's plan.
Before we left, Sophie stopped me.
"Amelia."
I turned.
"There is something you need to know."
"What?"
"Nathan isn't worried because you discovered Sophie."
"Then why?"
Her eyes were serious.
"Because you discovered the part of his life that was never supposed to be found."
"What part?"
She lowered her voice.
"The reason he needed the second life in the first place."
That evening, I returned home with the folder in my hands.
For the first time, Nathan's betrayal looked smaller.
Not because it hurt less.
Because I finally understood.
The affair was only the surface.
Beneath it was something much bigger.
A plan.
A structure.
A life carefully designed.
And at the center of it all was a question I couldn't ignore:
What was Nathan Reed preparing to take from me?
My phone buzzed.
A message from Sophie.
One sentence.
Check your name on the company documents.
I opened the files again.
And there it was.
My signature.
On a document I had never seen.
A document dated six months earlier.
A document that suggested Nathan had already started moving pieces into place.
Without me.
Against me.
I stared at the page.
And finally understood.
The woman with two names wasn't the biggest secret.
May you like
The biggest secret was that my husband had been preparing for a future where I no longer existed.
