Chapter 13 – The Truth About Their Marriage

Chapter 13 – The Truth About Their Marriage

For three years, Anna believed her marriage had been destroyed by one terrible night.

Christmas night.

The night her husband watched her fall.

The night he chose reputation over her safety.

The night she realized the man sleeping beside her was a stranger.

But after everything she had discovered…

Anna finally understood something painful.

The Christmas incident was not the beginning of the truth.

It was the moment the truth could no longer hide.

The photograph sat on Anna’s kitchen table for hours.

She had not moved it.

She had not thrown it away.

She had not shown it to anyone.

Because something about it disturbed her.

Not the person standing beside David.

Not the location.

Not even the message.

It was the feeling.

A strange feeling that she had seen this before.

The man in the photograph was standing beside David outside an old building.

The building looked abandoned.

But Anna recognized it.

She had seen it in David’s old files.

A property connected to his family.

The Miller Foundation building.

A place David claimed he never visited.

When Jonathan saw the photograph, his expression changed.

“You know this place?”

Anna nodded slowly.

“David mentioned it once.”

“What did he say?”

“That it was closed years ago.”

Jonathan looked carefully at the image.

“It wasn’t.”

The investigation began again.

Not because they wanted revenge.

Because they needed answers.

Detective Rachel Morgan traced the photograph.

Within hours, she found something disturbing.

The picture had been taken six months before Anna and David’s wedding.

Six months before their marriage.

Six months before David promised to love and protect her.

“Who is the person with him?”

Anna asked.

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“That’s what we’re trying to find out.”

Two days later, they discovered the identity.

His name was Victor Hale.

A businessman.

A former partner of David’s father.

A man who had disappeared from public life after a financial scandal.

Anna frowned.

“What does he have to do with David?”

Rachel placed another file on the table.

“Everything.”

The file revealed something Anna never knew.

David’s family had not always been wealthy.

Before the luxury houses.

Before the private schools.

Before the perfect reputation.

The Millers had nearly lost everything.

The person who saved them?

Victor Hale.

He invested in the family business.

He helped Sylvia rebuild her image.

He helped David enter elite legal circles.

Jonathan read through the documents.

“So David owed him.”

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.”

“But why does this matter?”

Rachel looked at Anna.

“Because Victor Hale had one condition.”

Anna felt uneasy.

“What condition?”

Rachel opened another document.

A marriage arrangement.

Not official.

Not legal.

But a plan.

A discussion between powerful families.

The name written inside made Anna’s heart stop.

Anna Hayes.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

Jonathan immediately looked at her.

“Anna.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

She read the document again.

It was not a contract.

Not a guarantee.

Just a proposal.

A strategy.

A conversation between people who believed they could control the future.

David had not randomly met her.

He had not randomly chosen her.

There had been people watching.

Planning.

But there was one detail that confused everyone.

Anna had met David before anyone knew they would marry.

The relationship had developed naturally.

At least…

That was what she thought.

Then Rachel found another file.

A message exchange.

Between David and Victor Hale.

The first message was dated one week after Anna and David met.

Victor:
She seems attached to you already.

David:
She trusts easily.

Anna stopped reading.

Her hands became cold.

The next message was worse.

Victor:
Remember why this matters.

David:
I know.

Victor:
The Hayes family connection changes everything.

Anna closed the file.

Because suddenly every memory had become uncertain.

Every romantic moment.

Every promise.

Every “I love you.”

That night, she cried.

Not because she missed David.

Not because she wanted him back.

But because she was grieving the marriage she thought she had.

Her father found her sitting alone.

“I’m sorry.”

Anna wiped her tears.

“For what?”

“For not protecting you.”

She looked at him.

“Dad…”

“I knew powerful people could be dangerous.”

A pause.

“But I never imagined someone would enter your life with a plan.”

Anna shook her head.

“I should have seen it.”

Jonathan sat beside her.

“No.”

His voice was firm.

“Do not turn his choices into your failure.”

Meanwhile, David learned about the investigation.

And for the first time, he was truly afraid.

Not because of the court.

Not because of prison.

Because Victor Hale had returned.

A visitor requested to see him.

David expected his attorney.

Instead…

Victor Hale entered.

Older.

Calmer.

Still powerful.

David stared.

“You.”

Victor smiled.

“You look different.”

“You disappeared.”

“I left.”

“You abandoned me.”

Victor sat down.

“No.”

A pause.

“I watched.”

David’s anger grew.

“You used me.”

Victor smiled slightly.

“No.”

He leaned forward.

“I taught you.”

David said nothing.

Because a part of him knew.

Victor had shaped the person he became.

“You wanted power.”

Victor continued.

“I showed you how to get it.”

“You told me control was everything.”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

Victor looked at him.

“Now you failed.”

The words hit harder than any accusation.

Because David hated being seen as weak.

“Why are you here?”

Victor placed a small envelope on the table.

“Because there is one thing you don’t know.”

David opened it.

Inside was a document.

A birth certificate.

His face changed.

“What is this?”

Victor looked at him.

“The truth.”

David stared at the name.

A daughter.

A child.

A child he never knew existed.

“What does this mean?”

Victor smiled.

“It means you are not the only person with secrets.”

At the same time, Anna received a call.

From an unknown number.

A woman’s voice answered.

“Anna?”

“Who is this?”

A pause.

“My name is Emily.”

Anna froze.

“Emily who?”

The woman took a breath.

“Emily Miller.”

Anna felt her heart stop.

“There is no Emily Miller.”

The woman whispered:

“There was.”

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“David and I were married before you.”

Anna sat frozen.

Because suddenly the truth about her marriage was becoming clear.

She was not the first woman.

She was not the first promise.

She was not the first secret.

David Miller’s perfect life was built on hidden chapters.

And Anna had only read the beginning.
