Chapter 2: The Evidence No One Could Erase

The investigators moved with quiet precision.

"Nobody leaves this house," one of them announced as he displayed his badge.

The laughter that had filled the birthday party only moments earlier vanished.

Ofelia still knelt beside the cabinet, clutching the black trash bag against her chest.

"Put it down," the investigator ordered.

"It's only garbage," she stammered.

"Then you won't mind if we examine it."

Her trembling hands slowly released the bag.

Inside were exactly what Ernesto expected: forged loan applications, fake property transfer documents, altered bank records, and a handwritten notebook detailing every payment Julián had hidden through shell accounts.

The forensic examiner carefully photographed each document before sealing them into evidence bags.

Julián finally found his voice.

"This is illegal! You can't search my home without permission!"

Ernesto looked at him calmly.

"I didn't."

He nodded toward the investigator.

"Your mother volunteered the evidence the moment she tried to destroy it."

The investigator added quietly,

"And your assault against your wife occurred in front of multiple witnesses. Combined with the financial fraud investigation already underway, we have more than enough probable cause."

Several party guests slowly stepped backward.

None of them wanted to be associated with what was unfolding.

One by one, people admitted what they had seen.

"I heard him threaten her."

"I saw the bruises last month."

"He bragged about controlling her money."

The silence protecting Julián had finally collapsed.
