Chapter 1: The Witness Who Couldn't Stay Silent

The video did not stop when Emily rushed out the front door carrying Lily.

It continued for another four minutes.

Brian slammed the door so hard the family portrait hanging in the hallway crashed onto the floor.

"She's insane," he shouted, pacing the dining room.

Donna calmly picked up her wineglass as if nothing unusual had happened.

"Everyone here understands what happened," she said. "If anyone asks, Emily lost control. Brian only defended himself."

Around the table, nobody answered.

Brian's younger cousin, Jake, stared at the phone resting beside his plate.

He had started recording nearly twenty minutes earlier because he wanted proof of the argument before it became another family story that changed depending on who was telling it.

He never expected to capture a crime.

Donna looked directly at everyone.

"We're a family. Families protect each other."

Then she added the sentence Jake would never forget.

"If that little girl gets sick, we'll say Emily refused treatment. No one can prove otherwise."

Silence settled over the room.

Jake looked at the recording timer.

Everything had been captured.

For the first time in his life, he realized protecting the family meant sacrificing a child.

He quietly slipped his phone into his pocket.

That night he made a decision.

He wasn't going to protect them anymore.
