Chapter 7 – Family Secrets (1)

Chapter 7 – Family Secrets (1)
Claire barely slept.
Maya's final words echoed through her mind long after midnight.
"They never wanted your home."
"They wanted what was underneath it."
She had replayed the sentence dozens of times, searching for an explanation that made sense.
Her condominium overlooked Mission Bay.
It wasn't historic.
It wasn't a luxury penthouse.
It certainly wasn't hiding a fortune beneath its foundation.
Yet Maya had spoken with absolute certainty.
Either she knew something Claire didn't...
Or someone had lied to her.
Claire intended to find out which.
A Long-Overdue Conversation
The next morning, Maya arrived at Jacqueline Carter's office.
This time, she hadn't come alone.
Detective Isabel Moreno sat beside Carter at the conference table.
A digital recorder rested in the center.
Moreno looked at Maya.
"You understand this interview is voluntary?"
"Yes."
"You may stop at any time."
"I know."
The detective pressed the record button.
"State your full name."
"Maya Caldwell."
"And your relationship to Adrian Caldwell."
"My husband, Daniel, is Adrian's younger brother."
Moreno nodded.
"Mrs. Caldwell..."
"Yesterday you told Claire that the attack wasn't about her condominium."
"Explain."
Maya stared down at her folded hands.
"I will."
"But first..."
She looked toward Claire.
"You deserve to know what kind of family you married into."
The First Secret
"When I married Daniel fifteen years ago..."
"I thought the Caldwells were perfect."
"They were wealthy."
"Polite."
"Respected."
"Every holiday looked like a magazine cover."
She gave a bitter laugh.
"It took me less than six months to realize none of it was real."
Claire remained silent.
"The first time I saw Charles hit someone..."
"The victim wasn't Adrian."
"It wasn't Eleanor."
"It was Daniel."
Claire looked up sharply.
"What?"
Maya nodded.
"Daniel was nineteen."
"He had accidentally backed one of the vineyard trucks into a stone wall."
"The damage probably cost twenty thousand dollars."
Charles didn't yell.
He simply walked into the garage..."
"...and punched his own son in the face."
Silence filled the room.
"He broke Daniel's nose."
"There was blood everywhere."
Claire felt sick.
"And no one called the police?"
Maya smiled sadly.
"No."
"Eleanor handed Daniel a towel."
"Then she apologized..."
"...for making Charles angry."
Violence Was a Language
Maya's voice grew steadier as years of silence began to lift.
"I used to think it was an isolated incident."
"It wasn't."
"Charles never needed to scream."
"He didn't need to threaten."
"The family understood."
"If he became disappointed..."
"Someone was going to bleed."
Detective Moreno wrote steadily.
"How often?"
"Not every week."
"Not every month."
"But enough."
"Enough that everyone learned to obey before he had to ask twice."
Claire slowly realized something horrifying.
Adrian hadn't invented violence.
He had inherited it.
That explained him.
It did not excuse him.
Adrian's Childhood
"When Adrian was twelve..."
"He brought home a report card."
"One B."
"The rest were A's."
Claire frowned.
"A B?"
Maya nodded.
"Charles burned the report card in the fireplace."
Then he made Adrian stand there and watch while repeating one sentence."
"What sentence?"
"Second place belongs to losers."
Maya swallowed.
"Afterward..."
"Charles refused to speak to him for nearly three weeks."
Claire shook her head.
"That's emotional abuse."
"It was only the beginning."
The Broken Trophy
"When Adrian was fifteen..."
"He lost the state tennis championship."
"He came home carrying the runner-up trophy."
Maya closed her eyes.
"Charles took it..."
"...walked into the driveway..."
"...and smashed it with a hammer."
Nobody spoke.
"He told Adrian..."
"If you aren't the best..."
"You deserve nothing."
Claire looked toward Detective Moreno.
The detective's expression remained calm.
But the pressure of her pen against the notebook had become noticeably heavier.
Daniel's Silence
Claire finally asked the question that had been bothering her.
"Where was Daniel during all this?"
Maya looked away.
"He survived."
"What does that mean?"
"He learned the safest way to stay alive..."
"...was never to disagree."
Claire remembered Daniel at the dinner.
He had barely spoken.
Barely moved.
She had mistaken indifference for approval.
Perhaps...
It had been fear.
The Second Secret
Moreno flipped another page.
"You also mentioned Emily Harper."
Maya nodded.
"I need to explain something."
She took a slow breath.
"The family told everyone Emily ended the engagement."
"She didn't."
"What happened?"
Maya hesitated.
"Emily tried to leave Adrian."
"Why?"
"Because she discovered he'd been secretly tracking her phone."
Claire's eyes widened.
"What?"
"He monitored where she went."
"Who she met."
"He even demanded passwords to her email."
Claire remembered Adrian insisting she share her phone's location "for safety."
She had agreed.
At the time, it had seemed caring.
Now it felt terrifying.
The Night Everything Changed
"Emily packed her bags."
"She planned to leave while Adrian was at work."
"But Charles found out."
Claire frowned.
"How?"
"The house staff told Eleanor."
"Eleanor told Charles."
"Charles told Adrian."
The room fell silent.
"When Adrian got home..."
"He wasn't angry."
"He was calm."
"He asked Emily to sit down."
Claire's heartbeat quickened.
Maya's hands began trembling again.
"I heard shouting from upstairs."
"I ran toward the bedroom."
She stopped speaking.
Detective Moreno waited patiently.
"What did you see?"
Maya whispered.
"Blood."
"So much blood."
Before She Could Continue
The conference room door suddenly opened.
Jacqueline Carter's assistant hurried inside.
"I'm sorry to interrupt."
"What is it?" Carter asked.
"The reception desk just received this."
She placed a large envelope on the table.
No return address.
No postage.
Just one handwritten sentence.
FOR CLAIRE BENNETT
Carter carefully opened it.
Inside...
A single photograph.
Claire's breath caught instantly.
It showed her.
Standing outside her condominium building.
The photograph had been taken two days earlier.
She had no idea anyone was watching her.
Behind the photograph was another piece of paper.
Typed.
No signature.
Only eight chilling words.
Drop the charges.
Or you'll lose more than your home.
The room became deathly quiet.
Detective Moreno slipped on a pair of evidence gloves before touching the note.
Her eyes narrowed.
"This wasn't mailed."
"It was hand-delivered."
Claire felt the blood drain from her face.
"They know where I live."
Moreno looked directly at her.
"No."
She answered quietly.
"They want you to know they know."
Claire looked again at the photograph.
Someone had been watching her.
Someone who knew exactly where she was.
And if the timing of the threat was any indication...
Someone inside the Caldwell family's circle had already decided that arresting Adrian wasn't enough.
They intended to silence Claire...
May you like
No matter what it took.
