CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET THEY NEVER KNEW

CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET THEY NEVER KNEW

Hours later, Valerie sat in the emergency department with several stitches above her left ear.

Her phone rang.

"Dad."

"I'm on my way."

"You don't have to—"

"I do."

Forty minutes later, a distinguished gray-haired man walked into the hospital accompanied by two attorneys.

Diego's family had always believed Valerie's father was a retired engineer living quietly in Colorado.

They were wrong.

Richard Lawson was the founder of one of the largest architectural development firms in the western United States.

He hugged his daughter gently.

"I'm sorry this happened."

Valerie looked down.

"I kept hoping he'd change."

Richard nodded sadly.

"I know."

One attorney placed a folder on the table.

"The condominium is held through a protected family trust."

Valerie smiled faintly.

"I remember."

Years earlier, her father had insisted on the arrangement.

"If anyone ever tries to take what's yours," he had said, "they'll discover they never had a legal path to it."

The property couldn't be transferred without Valerie's direct written authorization.

Not by a spouse.

Not by in-laws.

Not by pressure.
