The porcelain plate exploded against Elena Carter's temple before anyone at the table had time to react.
For a heartbeat, the grand dining room of the Hawthorne Estate fell silent except for the ringing in Elena's ears. Warm blood trickled down the side of her face, staining the white collar of her blouse.
Only moments earlier, Richard's mother had announced—with astonishing confidence—that she would be moving into Elena's waterfront condominium in San Francisco.
Not asking.
Declaring.
When Elena calmly refused, every member of the family turned against her.
Richard stood.
His face twisted with humiliation and rage.
Then came the plate.
Twenty guests watched.
Not one moved.
Elena reached into her purse, pulled out her phone, and dialed 911.
"My husband assaulted me," she said clearly. "There are multiple witnesses."
Panic spread around the room.
Richard lunged forward.
Before he could reach her, his sister-in-law Olivia stepped between them.
"Don't touch her again."
Outside, flashing blue and red lights illuminated the mansion windows.
As officers entered, Olivia quietly slipped a small black flash drive into Elena's trembling hand.
