Chapter 2: The Family Business

Chapter 2: The Family Business

I didn't go home.

Instead, I drove straight to the district attorney's office with copies of every file from the flash drive stored in three different locations.

The prosecutor spent nearly four hours reviewing the evidence.

When she finally looked up, her expression had changed.

"This is much bigger than domestic violence."

Search warrants were issued before sunrise.

Deputies returned to the Caldwell estate with investigators from the financial crimes unit.

What they found had almost nothing to do with real estate.

Hidden behind the image of a respected winery family was an elaborate network of fraud.

The Caldwell vineyards had been used for years to launder money through fake suppliers, inflated invoices, and shell companies.

The family wasn't trying to steal my condo because they needed another home.

They needed another asset.

Property that could be transferred, refinanced, or used to hide money before the investigation reached them.

Meanwhile, Maya disappeared.

No one could find her.

Adrian insisted she had "gone to visit relatives."

No one believed him.

Then another file from the flash drive was decrypted.

It contained audio recorded only three nights earlier.

Adrian's father spoke first.

"If she refuses to sign over the condo..."

Adrian interrupted.

"I'll make her."

His mother calmly added,

"And if the police get involved?"

A long silence followed.

Then someone laughed.

"They've believed us before."

The room listening to the recording became completely silent.

The prosecutor immediately ordered arrest warrants.

But before officers reached the estate, every member of the Caldwell family had vanished.

Except one.

Maya walked into the courthouse by herself.

She carried a small metal lockbox.

"They missed one thing," she said.

Inside were decades of handwritten ledgers.

Every illegal payment.

May you like

Every victim.

Every name.
