CHAPTER 12

THE ENEMY INSIDE MERIDIAN
The divorce was supposed to be the end.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
The newspapers moved on.
The cameras disappeared.
The public found another scandal to consume.
Victor Hayes became yesterday's news.
But inside Hartwell Group...
the real battle was only beginning.
Because Victor had been a visible enemy.
The kind of enemy everyone could see.
The dangerous ones were different.
They smiled at meetings.
They shook hands.
They called you family.
And they waited.
The morning after the divorce was finalized, I arrived at Hartwell Tower before sunrise.
Not because I wanted to prove anything.
Because I could not sleep.
Too many questions were still unanswered.
The anonymous messages.
My father's hidden investigation.
The name Daniel Whitmore.
The person inside Hartwell leaking information.
Victor's collapse had revealed a problem.
But it had not revealed the person who created it.
Russell was already waiting in my office.
A thick file sat on the desk.
"More bad news?"
I asked.
Russell looked tired.
"I wish it was only bad news."
I opened the file.
Inside were financial records from Meridian BuildWorks.
At first glance, everything looked normal.
Revenue.
Projects.
Contracts.
Nothing unusual.
Then I saw the pattern.
"These numbers..."
I looked closer.
"They were changed."
Russell nodded.
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Three years."
My stomach tightened.
Three years.
Not a mistake.
Not Victor acting alone.
A system.
"Victor couldn't have done this by himself."
Russell's expression confirmed it.
"No."
I turned another page.
There were approvals.
Signatures.
Internal authorizations.
People had helped him.
"Who knew?"
Russell looked at me.
"That is the question."
At nine o'clock, we called an emergency meeting.
The executives arrived one by one.
Some looked nervous.
Some looked confused.
Some looked angry.
The room was filled with people who had spent years building their careers around Hartwell Group.
People who knew my father.
People he trusted.
Arthur entered last.
The room immediately became quiet.
"We have discovered financial irregularities at Meridian."
My father said.
"No one leaves this room until we understand what happened."
The executives exchanged looks.
Then a man at the end of the table spoke.
"Are you suggesting someone here committed fraud?"
His name was Thomas Reed.
The chief financial officer of Meridian.
A man who had worked with my father for fifteen years.
I studied his reaction.
Not his words.
His reaction.
Defensive.
Too fast.
My father noticed too.
"We are suggesting nothing yet."
Arthur replied.
"We are collecting facts."
Thomas smiled.
"Of course."
But something about that smile bothered me.
It was not fear.
It was calculation.
After the meeting, Adrian Cross stopped me in the hallway.
"You saw it too."
I looked at him.
"Saw what?"
"Thomas."
I said nothing.
Adrian lowered his voice.
"He's been acting strangely for months."
"Why didn't anyone investigate?"
A pause.
"Because he was trusted."
That answer bothered me.
Because trust was exactly what allowed betrayal to grow.
That afternoon, I reviewed Thomas Reed's history.
Perfect career.
Perfect reputation.
Perfect record.
Almost too perfect.
Then I found something.
A company name.
A small consulting firm.
A payment.
A connection.
I looked at Russell.
"Who owns this company?"
Russell checked.
His face changed.
"Daniel Whitmore."
Again.
That name.
The same man my father said wanted to hurt his family.
I immediately went to my father's office.
He was reading a report when I entered.
"You knew."
He looked up.
"About Thomas?"
"About Daniel Whitmore."
The silence answered.
"Dad."
My voice hardened.
"What happened twenty years ago?"
Arthur leaned back.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then:
"Daniel was my closest friend."
I waited.
"And my biggest mistake."
The story began before Hartwell Group became an empire.
Before the towers.
Before the billions.
Before the reputation.
Arthur and Daniel built their first company together.
Two young men with nothing.
Two friends who believed they could change the world.
But success changes people.
Arthur became focused.
Disciplined.
Relentless.
Daniel became impatient.
He wanted faster growth.
Bigger risks.
More control.
The partnership broke when Daniel approved a dangerous investment without Arthur's knowledge.
The investment failed.
Millions were lost.
People were hurt.
Arthur removed him from the company.
And Daniel never forgave him.
"He blamed me."
My father said quietly.
"He believed I stole the life we were supposed to build together."
I looked at him.
"Did you?"
Arthur looked hurt by the question.
But he answered.
"No."
The confidence in his voice made me believe him.
"But I did something worse."
"What?"
"I let him leave without telling the truth."
I frowned.
"What truth?"
Arthur looked toward the window.
"Daniel was not the only person responsible for what happened."
The room became colder.
"Who else?"
He looked back at me.
"Your mother."
I froze.
My mother had died when I was young.
She had always been the one person in my family history nobody questioned.
"What does my mother have to do with Daniel?"
Arthur opened a drawer.
Inside was an old photograph.
Three people.
Arthur.
Daniel.
And my mother.
But the way they stood together...
It was not the picture of strangers.
It was the picture of people who shared a secret.
That night, Thomas Reed made a phone call.
He stood alone in his office.
The lights of Meridian glowing behind him.
"The divorce is complete."
A pause.
"Yes."
He listened.
"She knows about Daniel."
Another pause.
"No."
His expression hardened.
"She doesn't know everything."
He looked at a photograph inside his desk drawer.
A photograph from twenty years ago.
Then he whispered:
"She will."
The next morning, another message arrived on my phone.
Unknown number.
YOUR FATHER BUILT AN EMPIRE ON A LIE.
A second message followed.
ASK HIM WHO YOUR REAL ENEMY WAS.
I stared at the screen.
Because for the first time...
I wondered if my entire life had been built on a story someone else wanted me to believe.
Victor Hayes had tried to take my future.
May you like
But someone else had been trying to control my past.
