Chapter 1: The Men in Uniform

The heavy footsteps grew louder.

Ryan glanced toward the apartment door, confusion replacing the confidence he had worn for months.

"Who else is here?"

Colonel James Bennett never answered.

The front door opened.

Four Military Police investigators stepped inside, followed by two detectives from the Chicago Police Department and a representative from Child Protective Services.

Ryan stared in disbelief.

"What is this?"

James didn't even look at him.

"When my daughter stopped answering video calls," he said quietly, "I stopped believing your excuses."

He reached into his jacket and removed a small folder.

"For the last six weeks, I've been documenting everything."

Phone records.

Medical appointment cancellations.

Bank statements showing Emily's accounts had been emptied.

Text messages Ryan had deleted—already recovered by digital forensic experts.

Linda's face turned pale.

"You had us investigated?"

James finally met her eyes.

"I had my daughter protected."

One of the detectives stepped forward.

"Ryan Ashford, you're being detained while we investigate allegations of domestic violence, unlawful imprisonment, financial coercion, and child endangerment."

Ryan backed away.

"This is ridiculous!"

Emily spoke for the first time in weeks.

"I never fell."

The room froze.
