Chapter 2: The Call That Shattered an Empire

Chapter 2: The Call That Shattered an Empire

Eight minutes later, the private elevator doors opened.

Three members of the Sterling family security team rushed into the penthouse, followed closely by paramedics.

The sight that greeted them stopped everyone in their tracks.

Clare lay on the marble floor surrounded by shattered glass, crushed orchids, and streaks of blood.

One security officer quietly turned away.

Another immediately began photographing the scene.

Nothing would be left undocumented.

Moments later...

Richard Sterling walked into the apartment.

For seven years, he had imagined countless versions of seeing his daughter again.

None of them looked like this.

He knelt beside her without saying a word.

Clare reached weakly for his hand.

"I'm sorry..."

Richard gently brushed the hair from her face.

"You came home."

"That's all that matters."

Meanwhile...

Matthew arrived at Lauren's luxury townhouse believing the night was finally over.

His phone buzzed.

Then again.

And again.

Thirty-seven missed calls.

His Chief Financial Officer.

The General Counsel.

The Chairman of the Board.

Before he could answer, every screen in the living room lit up with breaking financial news.

STERLING CAPITAL WITHDRAWS STRATEGIC SUPPORT FROM NEXUSCORE.

His face went pale.

"No..."

Another notification appeared.

Emergency Board Meeting Scheduled—CEO Attendance Required.

Lauren frowned.

"What's happening?"

Matthew stared silently at the screen.

He suddenly remembered something he had spent years convincing himself didn't matter.

NexusCore's earliest funding...

Its banking relationships...

Its largest institutional investors...

All traced back to one family.

The Sterlings.

And Richard Sterling had just answered his daughter's call.

At dawn, the boardroom of NexusCore was filled.

The directors sat in complete silence.

The company's lead independent director placed a thick folder in front of Matthew.

"What is this?"

"The evidence."

Medical reports.

Photographs.

Security footage from the penthouse elevator.

Building access logs.

A preliminary police report.

The director looked at him steadily.

"You assaulted your wife."

Matthew tried to speak.

"It was a private family matter."

"No."

The chairman interrupted.

"It became a corporate matter the moment our CEO demonstrated conduct that exposes this company to catastrophic legal, financial, and reputational risk."

A unanimous vote followed.
