Claire Morgan looks forward to her daughter Lily's sixth birthday, hoping the day will finally bring peace after years of tension with her in-laws, Margaret and Robert Bennett. Among the colorful presents arrives a plain brown teddy bear with no return address except the grandparents' name.
Lily hugs the bear tightly before suddenly freezing.
She notices something hard beneath the stuffing near its left eye.

Claire immediately feels uneasy. Instead of opening the toy herself, she seals it in a paper bag and calls her older brother, Detective Aaron Morgan. His urgent instructions make her realize this is far more serious than a strange toy.
By that evening, the teddy bear has become evidence in a criminal investigation.
