Chapter 9 – The Hospital Investigation

Chapter 9 – The Hospital Investigation
Hospitals are supposed to be places where people heal.
Where strangers fight to keep you alive.
Where machines monitor every heartbeat.
Where pain is treated with medicine, and fear is answered with compassion.
But after what happened in Room 1107, the hospital became something else for me.
A crime scene.
Every hallway.
Every camera.
Every recorded conversation.
Every document.
Everything became evidence.
And for the first time in my life...
I was no longer trying to save my family.
I was trying to uncover the truth.
The morning after my father revealed my grandfather’s secret, Daniel arrived earlier than usual.
He did not knock immediately.
He stood outside my room for a moment.
Watching.
Thinking.
When he finally entered, he was carrying a large black folder.
"You look serious."
He placed the folder on the table.
"Because I found something."
I looked at the folder.
"About the attack?"
Daniel nodded.
"And about something much bigger."
I felt the familiar pressure in my chest.
The feeling that came every time another piece of my old life disappeared.
"What did you find?"
He opened the folder.
Inside were printed security reports.
Hospital access logs.
Camera records.
Visitor information.
"The hospital investigation is complete."
I looked at him.
"Investigation?"
"Yes."
Daniel leaned forward.
"Your family's visit was not a normal confrontation."
I already knew that.
But hearing it from him made it real.
"What do you mean?"
He pointed to the first page.
"Your mother, father, and brother arrived together."
"Yes."
"But they did not come directly to your room."
I frowned.
"What?"
"They spent twenty-three minutes in the hospital lobby before coming upstairs."
My stomach tightened.
"Doing what?"
Daniel turned the page.
"Meeting someone."
The room became silent.
"Who?"
Daniel looked at me.
"That is what we are trying to determine."
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because suddenly the attack did not feel like a desperate family argument.
It felt planned.
Daniel showed me the lobby footage.
The screen displayed my family entering.
My mother.
My father.
Connor.
Then another person appeared.
A man in a gray coat.
He sat across from them.
No obvious connection.
No conversation audio.
But Daniel paused the video.
"Look closely."
I leaned forward.
The man placed something on the table.
An envelope.
My mother picked it up.
Then my father looked around nervously.
Connor checked his phone.
"What is that?"
"We don't know yet."
Daniel continued.
"But we identified the man."
My heart beat faster.
"Who?"
Daniel opened another document.
"His name is Victor Hale."
The name meant nothing to me.
"Who is he?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Someone connected to your father's old business."
I stared at the image.
A stranger.
A meeting.
An envelope.
"Why would my family meet him before attacking me?"
Daniel's answer was simple.
"Because they may not have come to ask for money."
He paused.
"They may have come because they were running out of time."
Later that day, I requested copies of all hospital records connected to my treatment.
Not because I distrusted doctors.
Because I had learned something important.
Trust without verification was how I ended up here.
The records revealed something strange.
My mother had contacted the hospital two days before my admission.
I stared at the page.
"Why?"
Daniel checked the details.
"She asked about your medical condition."
I frowned.
"Before I was admitted?"
"Yes."
A chill moved through me.
"How did she know?"
Daniel looked at the file.
"That is what concerns us."
My health problems had been getting worse for months.
The fatigue.
The swelling.
The exhaustion.
I had hidden it from my family.
Or at least...
I thought I had.
Then Daniel showed me another record.
A private medical information request.
Someone had attempted to access my health records.
The requester:
Richard Whitaker.
My father.
I stared at the name.
"He was checking my medical records?"
Daniel nodded.
"Without your permission."
The betrayal felt different.
Money was one thing.
But my health?
My body?
My private fears?
"Why?"
Daniel looked at me carefully.
"That is the question."
That evening, I called my father.
He answered immediately.
"Maya?"
"Did you access my medical records?"
Silence.
Only two seconds.
But I heard enough.
"You did."
He sighed.
"I was worried."
"Worried?"
My voice shook.
"You were checking my health before I even knew how sick I was."
"Maya, listen—"
"No."
I interrupted.
"You don't get to explain everything away anymore."
My father became quiet.
Then he said:
"There was something we needed to know."
I froze.
"We?"
A terrible feeling entered my mind.
Not just my parents.
Someone else.
"Who else knew?"
My father did not answer.
And that silence told me everything.
"Who else knew?"
I repeated.
Finally, he whispered:
"Your grandfather's lawyer."
I sat completely still.
"My grandfather's lawyer?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
My father breathed heavily.
"Because your grandfather left instructions."
"What instructions?"
The answer came quietly.
"He said you would only receive your inheritance if you were independent."
I felt my heart stop.
Independent.
The word echoed.
My grandfather had known.
He had known exactly what kind of family I was born into.
Then my father said the final sentence.
The sentence that changed the entire investigation.
"Your grandfather didn't leave you money, Maya."
A pause.
"He left you control."
I looked at Daniel.
The same thought crossed both our minds.
The $250,000 was never the real prize.
It was the distraction.
Someone had spent years trying to control me.
Because if I discovered what my grandfather left behind...
May you like
They would lose everything.
