Chapter 2: The Line No One Could Cross Again

Chapter 2: The Line No One Could Cross Again
The ICU doors burst open.
Daniel didn't run.
He walked.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
His rain-soaked jacket clung to his shoulders after hours of driving through storms, but the exhaustion in his face disappeared the instant he saw Lucía lying in the hospital bed.
Then he saw me.
My hands were trembling.
My cheeks were stained with tears.
He crossed the room and wrapped one arm around me.
"What happened?"
I couldn't answer.
The nurse did.
"Sir... your daughter's oxygen mask was intentionally removed."
Daniel's eyes slowly turned toward my parents.
My mother folded her arms.
"Oh, don't be ridiculous. I barely touched it."
The head ICU physician stepped forward.
"Mrs. Elena's mother, your actions caused an immediate oxygen desaturation event."
"You endangered the life of a critically ill child."
For the first time, my father looked uncertain.
"It was an accident."
"No," another nurse answered firmly.
"We all saw it."
Daniel gently kissed Lucía's forehead before turning back toward my parents.
His voice remained calm.
"So this is the family my wife spent thirty years trying to earn love from."
Nobody answered.
He looked at my mother.
"You called her dramatic while your granddaughter fought to breathe."
Then at my father.
"You demanded money for a birthday party while she was signing surgical consent forms."
Finally, he looked at Karina.
"And you worried about ruined decorations instead of a little girl's life."
The silence was unbearable.
Then Daniel reached into his wallet.
He removed a folded envelope.
Inside were copies of every bank transfer we had made to my parents over the last eight years.
Birthdays.
Medical bills.
Home repairs.
Loans that were never repaid.
Vacation deposits.
Emergency expenses.
He placed them on the bedside table.
"My wife believed helping her family would one day earn their kindness."
He looked at me.
"It never did."
Then he turned back toward them.
"Today that ends."
Hospital security entered moments later.
The charge nurse spoke clearly.
"You are no longer permitted anywhere near this child."
"If you refuse to leave, law enforcement will be called."
For the first time in my life...
My mother wasn't the one giving orders.
She was the one being escorted out.
As the doors closed behind them, the room became quiet again.
Daniel took my hand.
"You never have to beg those people to love you again."
I broke down in his arms.
May you like
Not because I was weak.
Because someone had finally chosen to protect me.
