CHAPTER 2 — THE RED ENVELOPE

CHAPTER 2 — THE RED ENVELOPE

Renata stepped into the quiet hallway outside the private dining room.

She didn't go to the restroom.

Instead, she opened her handbag and removed a red envelope that had remained sealed for months.

She took a slow breath.

Then she sent a single text.

Come in.

Less than a minute later, the restaurant's maître d' approached the private room.

Behind him were two attorneys, a forensic accountant, and two investigators from the financial crimes division, each carrying official identification.

Inside, Evangelina had just begun the anniversary toast.

"To family," she declared proudly.

The doors opened.

Every conversation stopped.

"Mrs. Renata Ibarra?" one investigator asked.

Renata nodded calmly.

"We're ready."

Alonso stood so abruptly that his chair scraped across the floor.

"What is this?"

May you like

Renata finally looked directly at him.

"The proof."
