Chapter 5 – Mark’s Confession

Chapter 5 – Mark’s Confession

Daniel stared at the name written in the ledger.

Emily Whitaker.

His sister.

The person he had protected his entire life.

The person who had stood beside him through every loss.

The person who had cried with him when their father died.

For several seconds, the basement disappeared.

There was only the page.

The ink.

The name.

"No."

Daniel whispered.

Emily looked at him.

"Daniel..."

He slowly closed the ledger.

"Don't."

His voice wasn't angry.

That was what frightened everyone.

Anger was easier.

Anger burned quickly.

But disappointment...

Disappointment stayed.

"I need an explanation."

Emily looked toward Margaret.

Then toward Mark.

Nobody spoke.

That silence hurt more than the accusation.

Daniel turned to Mark.

"You knew."

Mark lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel stepped back.

"You knew my sister was connected to this?"

"Yes."

"And you said nothing?"

Mark took a breath.

"I was trying to protect her."

Daniel almost smiled.

"That word again."

He looked around the basement.

"Everyone uses that word when they lie."

Emily finally spoke.

"Daniel, I didn't do what you think."

He looked at her.

"Then tell me what I should think."

Emily opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because whatever she had been hiding...

It was real.

Mark stepped forward.

"Let me explain."

Daniel looked at him.

"Start talking."

Mark sat on an old wooden chair.

For the first time, Daniel saw something he had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear of Daniel.

Fear of the truth.

"Five years ago, I found out Edward was investigating Victor Hale."

Daniel frowned.

"Five years ago?"

Mark nodded.

"Before Edward died."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Edward asked me not to."

Daniel shook his head.

"Of course he did."

Mark continued.

"Your father knew the people involved were watching everyone close to him."

"Your family."

"Your friends."

"Even me."

Daniel looked at the ledger.

"And Emily?"

Mark was silent.

That was enough.

"Tell me."

Mark looked at Emily.

Then said:

"Emily was working with Edward."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

Emily looked down.

"Not against him."

Mark continued.

"She was helping him."

The basement became quiet.

Daniel stared.

"Then why is her name in the ledger?"

Mark answered:

"Because Edward wrote every name involved."

"People he trusted."

"People he suspected."

"People he needed to protect."

Daniel looked confused.

"That doesn't make sense."

Mark nodded.

"It didn't to me either."

He reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small memory card.

"I found this hidden with the ledger."

Daniel stared.

"What is it?"

"Your father's final recording."

Everyone became silent.

Mark placed the card inside an old laptop he had brought.

The screen flickered.

Then Edward Whitaker appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Daniel stopped breathing.

His father.

The last image he had of him was inside a coffin.

Now he was on a screen.

Speaking.

"Daniel."

Edward's voice filled the basement.

"If you are watching this, then the truth has finally reached you."

Daniel felt his eyes burn.

"I wish I could have told you everything myself."

Edward looked away from the camera.

"But some truths become weapons when the wrong people hear them."

The recording continued.

"Victor Hale is dangerous."

"He has destroyed families for money."

"But he is not the only enemy."

Daniel looked at Emily.

Edward continued.

"The person who betrayed me was someone I loved."

A pause.

"Someone I trusted completely."

Daniel leaned closer.

Then Edward said:

"Margaret was not the betrayer."

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

Edward continued.

"She made mistakes."

"She hid things."

"But she was trying to undo the damage."

Margaret covered her mouth.

Then came the sentence nobody expected.

"The person who betrayed me was not my enemy."

A pause.

"It was my child."

Daniel felt cold.

Edward had two children.

Daniel.

Emily.

Clara.

The recording continued.

"But betrayal is not always what it appears to be."

"Sometimes people do terrible things because they believe they have no other choice."

The screen went black.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Finally Daniel looked at Emily.

"Did you betray Dad?"

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"No."

"Then why did he say that?"

She looked broken.

"Because I did something worse."

Daniel waited.

Emily sat down.

"When I was twenty-two..."

She struggled to continue.

"Victor found me."

Daniel's expression changed.

"What?"

"He knew about Clara."

"He knew Dad was hiding evidence."

"And he threatened to hurt everyone."

Mark continued quietly.

"Emily made a deal."

Daniel looked at him.

"What deal?"

Emily whispered:

"She gave him information."

Silence.

Daniel felt betrayed.

"What information?"

Emily closed her eyes.

"The location of Dad's old office."

Daniel stepped back.

"And that's where he found the evidence."

Emily nodded.

"I thought I could control it."

"You were wrong."

"Yes."

Daniel looked at the ledger.

"Did you know about Clara?"

Emily shook her head.

"No."

"Did you know Dad was in danger?"

A pause.

"Yes."

The answer hurt.

"You knew?"

Emily cried.

"I tried to fix it."

Daniel looked away.

Because part of him wanted to hate her.

But another part remembered the little girl who used to hold his hand when he was afraid.

The sister who protected him.

The person who had always been there.

Then the basement lights suddenly went out.

Everyone froze.

A sound came from upstairs.

Glass breaking.

Mark stood immediately.

"Someone followed us."

Daniel grabbed the ledger.

Emily moved toward the stairs.

Then a voice echoed through the old house.

"Edward's children."

A man's voice.

Cold.

"You finally found what your father died protecting."

Daniel recognized it.

Victor Hale.

But this time...

He wasn't alone.

Another voice answered.

A woman's voice.

One Daniel knew.

Emily's face turned white.

Because the second person in the house was someone they never expected.

Margaret whispered:

"No..."

The voice called again.

"Come out, Daniel."

"Your family has been lying to you for thirty years."

A pause.

"And tonight..."

"We finish what Edward started."

Daniel tightened his grip on the ledger.

Because now he understood.

The ledger wasn't just proof of the past.

It was the reason people were willing to kill for the future.
