Chapter 1: The Slap That Stopped the Wedding

Chapter 1: The Slap That Stopped the Wedding
The silence lasted only a heartbeat.
Then the bride stood.
Still holding the little girl against her chest, she slowly turned toward the stunned crowd.
Her white gown brushed across the polished ballroom floor.
Mascara stained the child's tiny face as she buried herself deeper into the bride's shoulder.
The older woman—Margaret Whitmore—straightened her pearl necklace.
"She deserved it," she declared loudly.
"That child has no manners."
Several guests exchanged uneasy glances.
No one answered.
Margaret pointed an accusing finger.
"She ruined the wedding photographs."
"She spilled juice on my grandson."
"Someone needed to teach her respect."
The bride's voice was quiet.
"What is her name?"
Margaret frowned.
"What?"
"You slapped a child."
"What..."
"...is her name?"
Margaret hesitated.
"I don't know."
The bride nodded once.
"I thought so."
She looked down at the little girl.
"Sweetheart..."
"Can you tell everyone your name?"
The child sniffled.
"My name is Emma."
"And how old are you?"
"I'm six."
The bride gently wiped away her tears.
"Did you do anything wrong?"
Emma slowly shook her head.
May you like
"I was looking for my mommy."
The room grew even quieter.
