Daniel stood.

"Who pushed the cake?"

Margaret laughed softly.

"Oh, honestly. You're making this into something ridiculous."

Daniel turned toward his younger sister, Olivia.

She had been sitting silently near the window.

"Liv."

"What happened?"

Olivia hesitated.

Then she whispered,

"Mom knocked it off the table."

The room went still.

Margaret stared at her daughter.

"Watch what you're saying."

Olivia's eyes filled with tears.

"I've watched for years."

"You blamed Emily when you broke the china."

"You told everyone she forgot your anniversary."

"You made her apologize for things she never did."

She took a shaky breath.

"But today..."

"You ruined her birthday because she wouldn't transfer the vacation cabin into your name."

Daniel slowly turned toward his mother.

"The cabin?"

Emily quietly nodded.

Margaret had spent months insisting the property should be signed over to her because "family assets belong with the family matriarch."

Emily had always refused.
