CHAPTER 2 — THE SILENCE OF A HUSBAND

CHAPTER 2 — THE SILENCE OF A HUSBAND
The bouquet lay where it had fallen.
One white rose rolled across the marble floor until it stopped beside a polished black shoe.
Daniel.
My husband.
Less than an hour ago, he had slipped a diamond ring onto my finger and promised to stand beside me through every storm life could bring.
Now he simply stood there.
Motionless.
His jaw tightened.
His eyes flickered from his mother... to me... and back again.
"Daniel," I whispered.
My voice barely existed.
"Say something."
Victoria folded her arms, her smile never fading.
"This is your chance," she said calmly. "Choose wisely."
The room held its breath.
Daniel took one slow step forward.
For one impossible second, hope rushed back into my chest.
Then he stopped beside his mother.
Not beside me.
"I..." His voice cracked before hardening again. "Maybe Mother is right."
Every word felt like another shard of glass.
"This marriage happened too quickly."
"I don't think you're ready to be part of this family."
The guests finally began to breathe again.
Whispers spread through the mansion like smoke.
"I knew it..."
"She's just an ordinary girl..."
"The Ashfords would never truly accept her."
I stared at the man I had loved for four years.
The man who had once rented a tiny apartment with me because he claimed he wanted a simple life.
The man who had sworn his family's wealth meant nothing to him.
Now I realized something terrifying.
He had never been choosing between love and money.
He had already chosen.
Long before today.
Victoria walked closer until only a few feet separated us.
She reached into her designer handbag and removed a checkbook.
Without hesitation, she wrote a number.
Five million dollars.
She tore out the check and let it drift onto the marble floor.
"Take it," she said.
"Disappear."
"And never use the Ashford name again."
I looked at the paper.
Then I looked back at her.
Slowly...
I smiled.
Not because I had forgiven her.
Because for the first time that day...
I understood exactly who they were.
And exactly who I needed to become.
Without another word, I removed the diamond wedding ring.
I placed it gently on top of the check.
Then I turned and walked away through the shattered doorway.
May you like
Behind me, no one tried to stop me.
Not even Daniel.
