Chapter 2: The Workshop No One Was Allowed to Enter

The dining room was silent.

No one reached for their coffee.

No one touched the untouched slices of pie still sitting on the table after the funeral gathering.

The attorney calmly adjusted his glasses.

"My name is Richard Foster."

"I represented your father for twenty-three years."

He slid the property deed toward Mara.

"As of the date of your father's passing, this residence legally belongs to you."

Judith stared at the document.

"That's impossible."

"I'm his wife."

Richard nodded politely.

"You inherited other assets under the will."

"But this house was transferred into an irrevocable trust three years ago."

He tapped the signature.

"Your husband wanted only one beneficiary."

Mara.

Paige stepped forward.

"My father would never do that."

Richard opened a second folder.

"He anticipated that response."

He removed a sealed envelope.

Across the front, in familiar handwriting, were the words:

For Mara, when she needs it.

With trembling fingers, Mara opened the letter.

Inside was a single handwritten page.

My dearest Mara,

If you're reading this, I'm no longer there to explain my decision.

I love your mother.
I love your sister.
But love does not erase the truth.

For years, I watched you become the one who carried this family without asking for anything in return.

You repaired the roof.
You drove me to chemotherapy.
You paid bills when money became tight.
And every time I tried to repay you, you smiled and said,
"We're family."

I never forgot that.

The workshop holds everything you still don't know.

Go there before anyone else does.

Love,
Dad

Tears blurred the page.

Richard quietly placed a small brass key into her hand.
